Members Andy Stack and Jenn Wasner formed the duo under the moniker Monarch in mid-2006. Coinciding closely with their signing to Merge, Stack and Wasner decided to change their name to Wye Oak, in order to avoid confusion with a myriad of other bands named Monarch. The wye oak is Maryland's state tree. Their Merge label deal came through in January 2008 and a re-release of their debut LP ''If Children'', under the new name, was scheduled for April 8th.
