Jump SQ. (ジャンプSQ.) short for Jump Square (ジャンプスクエア, Janpu Sukuea), is a Japanese Monthly shōnen manga magazine that debuted on November 2 2007 by Shueisha, Inc. The magazine costs 500 yen[3] and is on sale every 4th of the month. Jump SQ.'s sister magazines are Shūkan Shōnen Jump, and VJump.

The series from Jump SQ. are put into the JUMP Comics (ジャンプコミックス, Janpu Comikkusu) line owned by Shūkan Shōnen Jump.

History

The official title of the magazine is Jump SQ. (abbreviated as "SQ." with no Jump) but the name is also a pun, as the abbreviation for "Square" ("SQ"), can stand for "Supreme Quality"[4] making a reference to its full title "Jump Square: Supreme Quality Manga Magazine". Jump SQ. is a replacement for the canceled Gekkan "Shōnen Jump" (literally, Monthly "Shonen Jump", abbreviated as "MJ") manga anthology.[5][6][7]

Four series from the Gekkan "Shōnen Jump" were serialized in Shūkan Shōnen Jump (literally, Weekly Shonen Jump abbreviated as WJ) until Jump SQ was released and included Tegami Bachi, Rosario to Vampire, Claymore (had three big magazine issues made[8]), and Gag Manga Biyori.[9] Before Jump SQ.'s official run, twelve back-up issues made in 2007. The issues featured characters from some of the newest series. The twelfth back-up issue was declared the very first issue with Embalming -The Another Tale of Frankenstein- on the cover.

Seven promo videos were released on Jump SQ's official website on its premiere date. The featured videos had high quality graphics with music written by famous anime music composers. The page is still accessible at the box entitled FUSION!! at the bottom of Jump SQ.'s website. A timer was also embedded at the bottom right corner of the website to countdown to the magazine's first printing in 2007. The first three issues also featured postcards of several popular Jump series. Another section of the magazine is provides information about U.S. Jump releases.

Before Jump SQ., a special edition of Shūkan Shōnen Jump's Akamaru Jump, called JUMP the REVOLUTION! featured many one-shots of SQ. series. Two one-shots: Embalming -Dead Body and Bride- (clalled Embalming -Corpse and Bride- in the U.S. featured in translation of Buso Renkin volume 10), and Embalming II -Dead Body and Lover-, later inspired the series Embalming -The Another Tale of Frakenstein-. As well as Embalming being a big part of it, the manga Luck Stealer by the creator of the Shūkan Shōnen Jump serie Mind Assassin made a one-shot in the magazine.

Several titles that had formerly appeared in other Jump publications have re-appeared under the Jump SQ. serialization. Mahō-Tsukai Kurohime, which was formerly serialized in Gekkan "Shōnen Jump", continued on the magazine's website as an online manga. Shaman King, which was originally serialized in Shūkan Shōnen Jump, is due to return in Jump SQ. in March 2008.

Jump SQ. Comic Grandprix

Jump SQ. Comic Granprix (ジャンプSQ.コミックグランプリ) abreviated as CG, is a contest organized by Jump SQ. to include more artists. The first winner of Jump SQ. Comic Grandprix was Digital Lostman (DIGITAL LOSTMAN), which was later included in Jump SQ. II (Second) as a one-shot.

Jump SQ. II (Second)

Jump SQ. II (Second) (ジャンプSQ.II(セカンド), Janpu Sukuea Sekando) short for Jump Square Second (ジャンプスクエアセカンド), is a recently announced spin-off issue of Jump SQ. and its first publication is set for April 2008.[10] The issue will feature a one-shot collaboration between the world-famous American comic writer Stan Lee and Shaman King's Hiroyuki Takei, called Kikō Dōji Ultimo.[11][12] Three regulars: Sekai no Chūshin de Taiyō ni Hoeru, Tsumikabatsu, and Magical Cooking Chaos Kitchen; were put in the SQ. II magazine along with other one-shots like Missing Battery, Cross, or Alone Again. The success of Ultimo led to the extra magazine Stan Lee the Book! (スタン・リーthe Book!) which is completely based on the hit manga.

List of Serialized Manga Series

The magazine has many manga, novels and special one-shots for new mangaka and authors, though only one novel has been printed in the magazine.

Commercials

Before Jump SQ. started many videos were posted on the Jump SQ. website, these videos had the featured artists in the videos. All of the videos were based on the series in the first issue such as Hello Baby, or Tista. The commercials on the early website had the mangaka doing a comedy act. For example one had Takeshi Obata (in the "Hello Baby" video to be exact) drawing with a bread stick soaked in vinegar. Later commercials called Promotion Movie (プロモーションムービー, Puromōshon Mūbī) were made for the debut Jump SQ. magazine and for all the recent issues, these videos unlike the first issue ones are still accessible through the main website. The recent videos are available to download on the iPod, PC, and PlayStation Portable (PSP). Later for an unknown reason the word "Music" were erased from the categories.

Below is a list of all the issue 1 commercials:
