Talk to us about talking
The Wikimedia Foundation is planning a global consultation about communication. The goal is to bring Wikimedians and wiki-minded people together to improve tools for communication.
We want all contributors to be able to talk to each other on the wikis, whatever their experience, their skills or their devices.
We are looking for input from as many different parts of the Wikimedia community as possible. It will come from multiple projects, in multiple languages, and with multiple perspectives.
We are currently planning the consultation. We need your help.
We need volunteers to help talk to their communities or user groups.
You can help by hosting a discussion at your wiki. Here's what to do:
- First, sign up your group here.
- Next, create a page (or a section on a Village pump, or an e-mail thread – whatever is natural for your group) to collect information from other people in your group. This is not a vote or decision-making discussion: we are just collecting feedback.
- Then ask people what they think about communication processes. We want to hear stories and other information about how people communicate with each other on and off wiki. Please consider asking these five questions:
- When you want to discuss a topic with your community, what tools work for you, and what problems block you?
- What about talk pages works for newcomers, and what blocks them?
- What do others struggle with in your community about talk pages?
- What do you wish you could do on talk pages, but can't due to the technical limitations?
- What are the important aspects of a "wiki discussion"?
- Finally, please go to Talk pages consultation 2019 on Mediawiki.org and report what you learned from your group. Please include links if the discussion is available to the public.
You can also help build the list of the many different ways people talk to each other.
Not all groups active on wikis or around wikis use the same way to discuss things: it can happen on wiki, on social networks, through external tools... Tell us how your group communicates.
You can read more about the overall process on mediawiki.org. If you have questions or ideas, you can leave feedback about the consultation process in the language you prefer.
Thank you! We're looking forward to talking with you.

Nanotherapeutics (Company)
I believe you developed this article but have not contributed to it since 2015. The company changed its name to Ology Bioservices in 2017. I'm still pretty new here and have never revised the main title of an article, but feel this needs changing. Can you help? Or just point me to a reference for everything that needs changing when the main title is revised? Thanks. Cleveland Todd (talk) 14:31, 29 May 2019 (UTC)

Article moves
You don't move an article then start a discussion. And you sure as hell don't give it a horrible title that makes not one lick of sense grammatically. Please familiarize yourself better with move procedures before making such decisions. oknazevad (talk) 00:54, 18 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Oknazevad: editing in anger and with a petty attitude is no way to work here. Next time, calm down before you do any editing. --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 13:37, 18 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Oknazevad: That was a really poor way of phrasing things. Ah, well - we're human. I don't disagree with the revisions you've done, and I appreciate the change. My titles were grammatically correct based on an assumption that there was a distinction between Women's and Men's WWE, but I think your titles are based on a better understanding of the WWE franchises. Thanks for the changes which make things better. --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 03:07, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
- Yeah, I did fly off the handle a bit. The two things that bothered me the most were that you were moving a page to a title that wasn't discussed when there was a specific and better title discussed as part of the move request. There was also the erroneous opening of a move discussion after the page was already moved. I'm sorry I lost my temper. oknazevad (talk) 03:18, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

2019 US Banknote Contest
US Banknote Contest | ||
---|---|---|
November-December 2019 | ||
There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate. If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here |

Happy Adminship Anniversary!
intechopen.com
What do you mean by /www.intechopen.com being a predatory site? Pierre cb (talk) 03:01, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Pierre cb: The publisher Intech Open Science has been highlighted as a predatory publisher, and there is an edit-comment bot that highlights every edit which includes the intech.com url sub-string. The original designation appears at Wikipedia:Edit filter/Requested#Special:AbuseFilter/891: More predatory publishers, and the 'abuse filter' appears at Special:AbuseFilter/891 (when I click through this, I get the 'edit filter' dialog, but I'm not sure what you will see). What I'm doing in respect to this publisher is considered standard operating procedure with respect to clearning the encyclopedia of predatory publisher content. Predatory publishers are considered along side vanity press publishers as not providing sufficient (or any) editorial input or filtering to be considered peer reviewed and rather are considered self-published; see the essay at Wikipedia:Vanity and predatory publishing for a better explanation of this. There are occassional disputes about specific citations, but I am not going to dispute any reversion of edits I'm doing along these lines; I will let others act on the abuse-filter-added comment addendum. Does that help explain what I did? --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 03:18, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Pierre cb: I'll point out a disagreement that happened shortly after I started doing this activity, at Archaea; take a look at the history of the page following https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Archaea&oldid=930235249 and the discussion at Talk:Archaea#Response to Headbomb. User:Headbomb has been VERY active in this space for years. Regards --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 03:27, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
- OK. What you explain is not very clear but the link to predatory publisher is. So I understand and found more reliable peer reviewed article for my references. Pierre cb (talk) 03:32, 17 December 2019 (UTC)

Curiosity (rover) ~
Hi Ceyockey! Can you tell me how NASA Technical Reports Server's (NTSR), on a report from NASA here is an "attributable to predatory publisher"? By the way nice to meet you. ~mitch~ (talk) 01:02, 18 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Mitchellhobbs: You had me worried there for a minute that I'd removed this in error. The chapter referenced is in the book "Radioisotopes: Applications in Physical Sciences", where it is the last chapter of the book, which was published by IntechOpen, which has been highlighted as a predatory publisher and which has an abuse filter deployed against it. See Wikipedia:Edit filter/Requested#Special:AbuseFilter/891: More predatory publishers for the abuse filter request, and Special:AbuseFilter/891 for the edit filter itself. One of the triggers for this edit filter is the DOI substring "10.5772", which appears in the citation parameter "doi=10.5772/23914", which was found in my "insource" search. The URL in the citation DOES point at NASA, but it is a 'locally hosted' abstracted chapter from the book and not a technical report per se. Hope that sufficiently explains my edit. I'm doing searches to manually remove citations to this publisher which took place before the introduction of the edit filter / abuse filter. Regards --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 02:14, 18 December 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for your work Ceyockey ~ I kinda figured that DOI triggered the filter ~ I did not read to the bottom ~ ~mitch~ (talk) 02:19, 18 December 2019 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of File:US Army Cyber Command SSI.png
A tag has been placed on File:US Army Cyber Command SSI.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". Predatory publisher
Ceyockey, you edited out a citation on the Epstein–Barr virus-associated lymphoproliferative diseases page because it was by a "predatory publisher" viz., [1]. Since I wish to use this reference in another page and will correct this reference on the Epstein-Barr...page, would you please let me know what is wrong with this reference? Thank you. joflaher (talk) 17:41, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
- The issue was the IntechOpen link to the wrong citation (with the same article title). Really what should have been done is simply to remove that link, since doi:10.1016/j.pathol.2017.09.006 is the correct citation. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 17:50, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

Unilever
Hi - Thanks for the additional figures that you have added to the Unilver infobox. I note that your source is the annual reports of the company which you have identified as a "self-published source". While updating the financial data of some other UK companies I noticed that some editors have been using some pretty diverse secondary sources for financial data including (i) (via wikidata) the Justice Department of the Czech Republic in the case of Avast; in this case the figures were in Czech koruna when the company publishes its annual report in US$, and (ii) a source known as "Macrotrends" in the case of British American Tobacco: in the latter case the revenue figures seemed to be much larger than the figures in the audited accounts (possibly but not necessarily because of a different treatment of tobacco taxes). My own view is that it is best to use primary sources for financial data but would welcome views. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 15:20, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

Companies established in 1971
Hi Ceyockey, I have expanded some of the categories for “Companies established in 1971” by country that you created in 2014 by adding other years e.g. Category:Sri Lankan companies established in 1972 as well as for 1971 etc. and have added a parent category (e.g. Category:Companies of Sri Lanka by year of establishment.
But there are some countries left which have few articles in the parent category and could be considered for deletion and upmerging to the “1971 establishments in .…” category. The countries are Category:Companies of the British Virgin Islands, Category:Companies of Burundi , Category:Companies of Cameroon, Category:Companies of the Gambia, Category:Companies of Guatemala, Category:Companies of Senegal, and for Category:South Yemeni companies established in 1971. Though Category:Companies of Colombia seems to have a bit more content, and could be expanded by more years of establishment. Hugo999 (talk) 01:50, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
@Hugo999:—Thanks for keeping me in the loop. As you point out, I created these years ago and they were a seed rather than an endpoint. It certainly could be that some country or year categories might be insufficiently populated, but as long as there is a framework for expanding the category set as needed, all's good. --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 02:13, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
@Hugo999:—another thought about cats like 'xxx of British Virgin Islands', this could go into a higher order category like 'xxx of British Overseas Territories' for instance, which would cover sixteen distinct territories. --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 02:19, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
Hi Ceyockey; as well as 1971, there are several (single-year) countries in 2007: Bolivia, Cambodia, Equatorial Guinea, Finland, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Nepal, Syria, and Venezuela. And in 2004; The Bahamas, Iraq, Qatar, Slovenia, Sudan, and Vietnam. Re a category for British Overseas Territories companies, the trouble is that several territories of Britain may fall outside it as they are Crown Dependencies etc, like the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man (which are handy to London for secret offshore companies!). I think I will just do Finland and for the others just the year in question (so that the country appears in Category:Companies by year by country though with only a subcategory for one year). I would also like to merge your Category:Korean companies established in 2004 to Category:South Korean companies established in 2004. Hugo999 (talk) 02:16, 23 August 2020 (UTC)

Gus Edwards (vaudeville)
Hi. When you added (vaudeville) to disambiguate all these links, which was good, you should also have added "|Gus Edwards", so that the link would cover the disambiguation, like so: Gus Edwards. I did it for a couple of these, which showed up on my watch list, but would you please fix the others? Thanks. -- Ssilvers (talk) 06:39, 13 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Ssilvers: I think I've taken care of them all now. Thanks for pointing it out. I was using WP:JWB and wasn't sufficiently careful. --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 01:31, 14 September 2020 (UTC)

Born vs b.
Hi there, I saw you changed some (born to (b. in dab article lists. Please don't, as it barely saves any space and just introduces more confusion. Here is a brief discussion on it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style/Disambiguation_pages#Should_life_dates_use_%22b.%22? Daniel Edwards (name)
Hi Ceyockey, you recently moved the page Daniel Edwards (disambiguation) to Daniel Edwards (name), arguing that the page only contains personal names. While that is true, that doesn't mean at all that it should be called "X (name)". It's still a disambiguation page. There are hundreds of disambiguation pages about names just like this one, that is "X (disambiguation)" as "X" is already taken by a primary topic, and obviously they all contain only personal names, but they're still called "X (disambiguation)". Page titles like "X (name)" are instead used for just first names or surnames; sometimes they contain information about the name (etymology etc) and sometimes they contain nothing more than a list of people with that name, but they're not disambiguation pages. Daniel Edwards (name), however, is one, and should be moved back to Daniel Edwards (disambiguation). Lennart97 (talk) 20:36, 4 November 2020 (UTC)
Move review of Allan Boyd
I'm afraid I don't agree with your close at Talk:John Boyd (footballer, born 1929). The single opposer had no relevant argument and it's clearly shown that the common name, and the name the player used, is 'Allan Boyd'. DrKay (talk) 16:01, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
- Except two of the sources say 'Alan'. The 'no consensus' close was therefore correct. GiantSnowman 16:02, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
- Stop following me around please. Stop responding to every single comment I make on every football-related page. I've asked you at least 4 times now to stop harassing me. Both sources that say 'Alan Boyd' also say he was born in 1926, but you rejected them for that. Only one source calls him 'John Boyd'[1]; three call him 'Allan Boyd'[2][3][4]. All the others call him 'John Allan Boyd'. DrKay (talk) 16:11, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
- You know damn well you only opposed at Allan Boyd as part of your petty feud and campaign of harassment. DrKay (talk) 16:12, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
- If you think I am harassing you then please raise it at ANI. FWIW your revert at your talk page was the first time I have seen you accusing me of harassment. The Boyd article has been on my watchlist because I created the article in 2009... GiantSnowman 16:16, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
