The 2022 New Mexico Bowl is a college football bowl game that is scheduled to be played on December 17, 2022, at University Stadium in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The 17th annual New Mexico Bowl, the game will feature teams from the American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, or the Mountain West Conference. The game is scheduled to begin at either 12:15 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. MST and will air on either ESPN or ABC, depending on if the NFL decides to flex their Week 15 Sunday Night Football game between the Patriots and Raiders out of primetime.[1] It will be one of the 2022–23 bowl games concluding the 2022 FBS football season.

Teams

The game will feature the SMU Mustangs from the American Athletic Conference and the FBS independent BYU Cougars.

This will be the fourth meeting between BYU and SMU; the Cougars have won all three previous meetings. From 1996–1998, the Cougars and Mustangs played together as members of the Western Athletic Conference.[2]

BYU Cougars

The Cougars, an FBS independent, finished the regular season with a record of 7–5. The team is led by seventh-year head coach Kalani Sitake.

This will be BYU's final game as an FBS independent, as the Cougars are set to join the Big 12 Conference in 2023.[3]
