Unwelcome

Since apparently the community accepts talk page bans, the following people are unwelcome to post here in any manner.

  • Kww, Malleus, John, Nuclear, Merridew

This ban includes any other accounts they may hold. If any of these people have something to say to me, their reprseentative must contact me first through "email this user" and obtain my authorisation. Their represeentative may not post here on their behalf either. Gimmetrow 12:00, 15 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Gimme. The article Eva Braun was recently promoted to GA, and the template on the talk page looks fine. I tried tinkering with it, but I still can't get the article page to update to show the promotion. It's still showing as C-class and a good article nominee. Thanks for any assistance with this little glitch. --Dianna (talk) 07:22, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I really don't follow. That article was removed from GAN 6 hours before your post here, and the article page had the GA icon applied about the same time. Are you referring to some script which changes the appearance of the page based on the talkpage templates? Or is this some caching issue? 16:18, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
Yes, it's a script available under Preferences:Gadgets. I purged the server cache last night but did not think to purge my local cache. That seems to have done the trick. Thanks for the tip, and hope you had a great holiday season. Regards, --Dianna (talk) 16:45, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Interview Regarding Wikipedia Bots

Greetings-

My name is Randall Livingstone, and I am a graduate student at the University of Oregon, currently collecting data for my dissertation on Wikipedia editors who create and use bots and assisted editing tools, as well as editors involved in the initial and/or ongoing creation of bot policies on Wikipedia. As a member of BAG and the bot community, I would very much like to interview you for the project at a time and in a method that is most convenient for you (Gchat, another IM client, Skype, email, telephone, etc.). I am completely flexible and can work with your schedule. The interview will take approximately 30-45 minutes.

My dissertation project has been approved both by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the University of Oregon, and by the Research Committee at the Wikimedia Foundation. You can find more information on the project on my meta page.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and I look forward to hearing from you to set up a time to chat. Thank you very much.

Bot actions question

Why do the bot's revisions to the review history of 102d Intelligence Wing continue to show the article as a GA and not an A-class article when it's passed A-class review? Is there no way to show that the article is A-class instead of GA? Pinetalk 06:10, 17 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A-class is decided by projects and appears in the project templates. 11:33, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

Removing the icon from GA articles that aren't GA articles

I noticed while cleaning up some miss-tagged Good articles that your bot does this automatically for Featured articles. Is it possible for this function to extend to GAs? There have been a few picked up recently (see Wikipedia talk:Good article reassessment#Possibly non-GAs tagged as GAs). AIRcorn (talk) 02:53, 18 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I had a script to do that, but the script broke when WP:GA was split, and I haven't had enough interest to update it. 03:25, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
It would be useful if it is an easy fix, although it is not too strenuous to do manually. Also on splitting WP:GA, would it have any affect on the bot if I sub divided songs by year or the episodes by series? AIRcorn (talk) 05:44, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I ended up splitting songs and episodes here. The bot might need updating to take into account the new categories. AIRcorn (talk) 08:38, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Main page appearance: W. E. B. Du Bois

This is a note to let the main editors of W. E. B. Du Bois know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on February 23, 2012. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/February 23, 2012. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or his delegate Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you might change it—following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:

W. E. B. Du Bois in 1918

W. E. B. Du Bois (1868–1963) was an American civil rights activist, author, and editor. After graduating from Harvard, where he was the first African American to earn a doctorate, he became a professor of history, sociology, and economics at Atlanta University. Du Bois, one of the co-founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, rose to national prominence as the leader of the Niagara Movement, a group of African American activists who wanted equal rights for blacks. Racism was the main target of Du Bois's polemics, and he strongly protested against lynching, Jim Crow laws, and discrimination in education and employment. He was a proponent of Pan-Africanism and helped organize efforts to free African colonies from European powers. Du Bois wrote several seminal essays and treatises, and published many influential pieces in his role as editor of the NAACP's journal The Crisis. He was an ardent peace activist and advocated for nuclear disarmament. The United States' Civil Rights Act, embodying many of the reforms for which Du Bois had campaigned his entire life, was enacted one year after his death. (more...)

MSU Interview

Dear Gimmetrow,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at [email protected] (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at [email protected]. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chlopeck (talkcontribs) 23:37, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

So many socks

With all of the sockmasters one encounters over years of working on Wikipedia, I find I begin to forget which is which. In tracking down two new sockmasters yesterday, I re-encountered the old issues you had with Category:Wikipedia sockpuppets of Jack Merridew. I had forgotten how much difficulty he caused ... and yet folks are still trying to get his latest socks unblocked. After so many years of encountering the same ole repeat abusers, it's hard remember who's who in the socking world, that is, which profile belongs to which sockmaster ... I think I should start to keep a directory offline, as I'm so surprised I had completely forgotten his antics with the articles you edit and his insistence on installing his own preferences. I'm wondering why you didn't speak up when User:Alarbus was making the internet suck? It's interesting that only five editors supported an agenda that did so much damage to FAC, and several of those same editors now want Merridew's socks unblocked (sample, but there's more.) Nomination of Personal life of Jennifer Lopez for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Personal life of Jennifer Lopez is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Personal life of Jennifer Lopez until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 08:56, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No. Such renames create unnecessary work for me. 12:53, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
Interesting. It creates unnecessary work for me, and then you do the even more unnecessary work of reverting, from a direct link to a redirect, - where are we? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:05, 17 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
How does it affect you significantly? You are not maintaining this template over tens of thousands of articles, are you? Gimmetoo (talk) 13:11, 17 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
May I have it correct and preferred on my GAs and FAs? I don't have to explain my affectations. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:28, 17 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This template is used in a nearly 100% consistent manner on the WP. Why do you wish to create inconsistency in usage at this point? And knowing full well that it adversely affects yet another part of the FA process? Gimmetoo (talk) 13:38, 17 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't want "to create inconsistency". I would prefer to have it correct everywhere, and I trust that you could have a bot change all instances. (We just did it for an image name.) Why not? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:46, 17 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh that is a loaded statement. And I caution you to watch civility. Care to rephrase anything about "correct" now? Gimmetoo (talk) 13:53, 17 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I may have a language problem, my English is limited, - so will not rephrase but explain. Am I right that the name of the template is "Article history"? Then I think the preferred way to link to it and to write about should be that name, not a redirect. That is what I described as "correct", but I can stick with "preferable" if you prefer, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:25, 17 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There are many issues here. But to start with, the template happens to be named that under the condition that all issues with that naming would be addressed and fixed. If issues are not being addressed and fixed by the user who promised to do so, then the condition no longer holds, because the only way to fix issues will be to restore the template to its former name. Update the article history following Good article reassessments

Would it be possible for your bot to update the {{article history}} template when the status of the {{GAR/link}} template is changed to keep or delisted following a WP:GAR. Something similar to what happens currently with WP:GAN [2]. It would make it much more simple to conclude reassessments. See Talk:Venus and Adonis (opera) and Talk:George W. Bush for examples of a delisted and kept reassessment that is not included in the article history, but in a seperate template. AIRcorn (talk) 04:39, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Seconded request. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 13:11, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate people asking rather than demanding. This wasn't done years ago because the way the GAR template functions doesn't match the way I process all the other review-related templates, which all have a separate template for pass or fail, whereas GAR uses a status indicator. Thus, handling GAR in its current form would be a non-trivial shift. Given the volume at GAR, it was agreed that GAR would be done by hand. I'm willing to look into it, but there is another open issue that has put further development on hold. 13:26, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
I guess since the number of Good articles has increased the number needing reassessment has too. Would it be easier to create seperate {{GAR/keep}}, {{GAR/delist}} and {{GAR/relist}} templates. That will still be easier than updating the article history by hand. We can survive well enough without the change for now, but if you do get a chance can you let me know so I can update the instructions at WP:GAR. Regards AIRcorn (talk) 05:07, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm so sorry, I misread your post. It's been a very long day.-- Astros4477 (Talk) 22:07, 11 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Gimme did not release his code, so the bot's tasks could not simply be picked up by another bot operator. User:Vacation9 wrote new code for VoxelBot to handle the most urgent parts of one task (FL/FAC/FAR closing, mentioned above), but he is not able to add additional functions at this time, so the remaining parts of that task, as well as Gimme's GA ArticleHistory task, are not being done at this time. I am working up a new bot request for these functions; ArticleHistory is a complex template and it will take some time to develop new bot code. In the meantime I have been manually adding ArticleHistory to GAs, so yours will get done sooner or later. Maralia (talk) 22:16, 11 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for doing all that for article history, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:20, 11 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Gimmetrow. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Gimmetrow.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

Notice

The article Fleur-de-Lis (DC Comics) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails WP:GNG.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.
