Amity University is a private university in India. Established by the non-profit Ritnand Balved Education Foundation in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh; it has campuses in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Gurgaon, Gwalior, Greater Noida, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Noida, Patna, Pune, London, Dubai, Singapore, Mauritius, New Jersey, and China.[1] In 2014, Amity University has been named by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) as one of Asia's top 300 universities. It is one of only 17 varsities from India to be included in this list (the others being 8 IITs, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Punjab, Pune University, BHU, Manipal, and Bits Pilani)[2] [3]


History

Amity University was formed by Ashok Chauhan, the founder of the Ritnand Balved Education Foundation. Amity was India's first private university slated to implement reservations based on caste etc. for both faculty as well as students,[4] The school started with an enrollment of 120 students. In 2011, it had 80,000 students in 240 programs.[5]

Accreditation

Amity University is accredited by NAAC (National Accreditation and Assessment Council) with grade A in 2010.[6]

Amity University, Noida

Amity Universities and the Degrees awarded by them are recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Amity's Business Schools are accredited by the American Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), USA.[7][8] Amity University, UP is also a member school of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) [9][10] Amity's Engineering Degrees are accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, IET, UK.[11]

Amity Law School

Amity Law School, New Delhi is a law school owned by the Ritnand Balved Education Foundation (RBEF) India, situated in the Amity University campus, Noida in NCR Delhi. [12] Amity Law School, Delhi was founded in 1999. The School was granted affiliation by the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi in 1999 and the affiliation has been approved by the Bar Council of India. The programme seeks to promote multi-disciplinary analysis of the socio-legal problems.The director of Amity Law School, Delhi is Prof. (Dr.) B P Singh Sehgal.

Association Memberships

Amity is a Member of and listed by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), the International Association of Universities (IAU), and the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU).[11]

Research

According to its chancellor, Amity faculty, scientists and students filed over 150 patents in 2010-2011 in areas ranging from nanotechnology to food processing.[13]

Campuses

Amity University has five campuses - Noida, Lucknow, Jaipur, Gurgaon, Gwalior and Mumbai.[14] It has Business Schools across various cities in India under the name of "Amity Global Business School",[15] like the "Amity Global Business School, Mumbai" which is it's B-School located in the city of Mumbai and similarly for Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Gurgaon, Gwalior, Greater Noida, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Noida, Patna, Pune, London,[16] Singapore,[17] Dubai[18] and Mauritius.[19] Students pursuing their Bachelor's degree from Amity Global Business School receive a BBA degree[20] from Amity University, UP and a Graduate Diploma of Business Administration from their campus.

Rankings and Recognition

The university received several rankings in the 2013 India Today college rankings. It was ranked India's #1 non-profit private university.[21] Its engineering school was ranked first amongst India's emerging colleges.[22] It's BBA program was ranked #2 in India.[23] The School of Communication was ranked #5 amongst Mass Communication programs in India.[24] The Fashion Design program was ranked Seventh in India.[25]

Amity Universities and the Degrees awarded by them are recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC). As per law, Universities do not require AICTE approval. Only institutions which are affiliated to Universities require approval. As Amity University is a Bonafide University established by a State Act, it does not require AICTE approval.[26][27] This standing of law is notified in the case of Bharathidasan University Vs AICTE.

Apart from the IITs and Delhi University, Amity University and five other Indian Institutes (Banaras Hindu University, Panjab University, Manipal University and Birla Institute of Technology and Science) made an entry to the Asian Universities Ranking 2014 published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). [28]

Management

Atul Chauhan is President of Ritnand Balved Education Foundation and Chancellor of Amity University.[29] Aseem Chauhan is the Additional President of the Foundation.[30] In 2007, USA Today reported that Ashok Chauhan, the founder of Amity, expected that generations of his family will control the school.[29]

Activities and Sponsorships

Amity tied up with Red Bull Racing and Amity's F1 Racing Club has organised many events like bringing Red Bull Drivers to campus as well as displaying on campus the Red Bull Racing Car.[31][32]

Amity has tied up with Manchester United Football club to organise soccer school programs for students. The first one was held in April 2013[33] Amity was one of the sponsors presenting the online broadcasting of the 2014 FIFA World Cup on LIVsports.in.[34]

Amity has been partnering IPL since many years and has been the action replay partner on the broadcaster Sony as well as sponsor of teams like Delhi Daredevils and Rajasthan Royals.[35][36] The famous Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the brand ambassador for Amity University. Amity also signed a sponsorship deal with the cricketer of worth US$1 million which allows their logo to be placed on his cricket bat.[37]

In exchange for co-branding opportunities, Amity has trained 22,000 volunteers for the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi.[38][39]
