Dr Abhay R. Vasavada started Raghudeep Eye Clinic (REH) - as a cataract speciality centre in 1984 Ahmedabad, India. He is the first Indian and only the second Asian to be awarded the Binkhorst Medal Lecture by the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS) in 2011 . This medal is one of the highest honours conferred for an outstanding contribution in the field of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Abhay Vasavada completed his Masters in Ophthalmology (M.S.) from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in 1975. He was awarded the coveted degree of a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (F.R.C.S.) in 1980. He completed higher surgical training, a necessity for the promotion to a consultant position in U.K. He went on to specialize in cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation, a domain that he has subsequently made his own.
He has been invited to perform live surgical demonstrations across the globe including the U.S.A., (Annual meeting of American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery), Germany, Italy, Hungary, Saudi Arabia, other countries of the Middle East, the entire Asia-Pacific region including China and Australia. He is a distinguished member of different local and international Ophthalmic societies all over the world.
Awards
1) He has been a recipient of best researcher award and Dr. B. C. Roy Award by Honourable President Dr. K.R. Narayanan in 1997.
2) In 2002 he was the recipient of 1st Asia Pacific Association of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (APACRS) Award for Best Educator in Asia Pacific Region.
3) He has been a recipient of American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Achievement Award, 2005.
4) He was selected as one of the 'Top Fifty Opinion Leaders' in 2005 for his Outstanding Contribution and Leadership in the field of cataract surgery, a survey taken by a 'Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today'.
5) He has also been awarded the Arthur Lim Oration by the Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (APACRS) for the year 2010.
6) To his credit, he has contributed 140 publications in peer reviewed national & international journals.
For last few years he is also heading & supervising research related to cataract development & management in children as well as adults. His ultimate goal is to keep providing highest quality of cataract management and solve some of the problems facing children and young adults.
