History
[edit]Acona appears to be a name derived from the Choctaw language, but its meaning is uncertain.[2] Some sources say Acona is derived from a Native American word of exclamation, similar to "whoa!" in English.[3] A post office called Acona was established in 1852, and remained in operation until 1911.[4] Acona was once home to a stage coach stop, tanyard, cotton gin, and millinery store.[3]
The Acona Church, Cemetery, and School are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[5]
