Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor (born 6 May 2019) is the first child of Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex. He is seventh in line of succession to the British throne.[1]

Archie’s name was revealed on 8 May 2019. He is seventh in line for the English Royal throne and a child to parents from the UK and the US.

Birth

Archie was born at 05:26 BST (04:26 UTC) on 6 May 2019.[2] The father described the birth as "a bit overdue". The place of birth has not been revealed. The media speculate that he was born either at Frogmore Cottage, the couple's home, or at a London hospital.[3] The child's name was not announced upon birth. Several landmarks were illuminated in different colors to mark the birth, including Niagara Falls, the CN Tower, and the London Eye.[4][5][6] He was first shown to the public during his parents' interview with the press at Windsor Castle two days after his birth.[7]

Mountbatten-Windsor is descended from the British royal family and the Spencer family on his father's side and from "a bellhop in a Cleveland hotel, a laundry worker in Chattanooga, and a bartender in an Atlanta saloon" on his mother's side.[8] He is the first half-American and the first multiracial baby in the history of British monarchy,[9] and his birth was anticipated by many black British people.[8] The baby is both a citizen of the United Kingdom and of the United States.[10][11]

Title and succession

A great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II,[3] Archie is seventh in the line of succession to the British throne, behind his father.[8] He is also heir apparent to his father's dukedom of Sussex.[3][9]

The Duke of Sussex is preceded in the line of succession to the throne by his father (the Prince of Wales), his brother (the Duke of Cambridge), and his brother's three children.[12] Since Harry is the younger son of the Prince of Wales,[13] his son is not automatically a prince of the United Kingdom or Royal Highness,[3] and is expected to be styled "like the children of any other duke".[12] Archie is therefore expected to be known as Earl of Dumbarton, being entitled to use one of his father's subsidiary titles as a courtesy title.[3][11] Should his paternal grandfather become king, he will be entitled to the style of Royal Highness.[13]
