Your blurb on the Battle of Port Hudson at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Port_Hudson is all whacked out. I do not know who made it up, but there is no information in that brief text that resembles anything that actually happened there, except that the Rebels and Yankees were at war. Randal Allred allredr@byuh.edu

You are right, the article suffers from a lack of content. I will load some in from actual history books and the "Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies." Modifications will appear in "History" as "Calendar5". Frank (talk) 18:37, 29 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The uses of adversity

[edit]
Steam locomotive used to drive a grist-mill

During the Siege of Port Hudson in 1863, the Confederates put one locomotive to a strange use: "Lifted free from the rails and with a Belt attaeched to the driving-wheels, it was used to operate a grist-mill that ground the corn into rough meal, whieh was their substitute for flour. It did the work in a very satisfactory manner." --NearEMPTiness (talk) 09:09, 5 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox flags

[edit]

Friedbyrd, regarding this revert and the comment, Misunderstanding of MOS:INFOBOXFLAGS, there is no misunderstanding. The guidance is quite clear. While flags may be used in conflict infoboxes, they must still serve a useful purpose. This occurs when there are more than one combatant on one side and flags act as a "key" to information in different sections of the infobox. This is not occurring here. "must serve a purpose" doesnt not appear anywhere in the description of INFOBOXFLAGS. There is no guidline that says you can only ever use flagicons when there are more than one party on each side of the conflict and it states multiple times that a military conflict is the perfect use of the flagicons. Referring back to the main article on the Civil War itself, it uses flagicons. Friedbyrd (talk) 12:31, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Flag icons should only be inserted in infoboxes in those cases where they convey information in addition to the text. They serve a useful purpose when doing this. Cinderella157 (talk) 22:07, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
