Jacqueline Valenzuela
[edit]Jacqueline Valenzuela (born 1997) is a multimedia artist known for practicing art using different mediums and creating art pieces that represent her identity as a Chicana lowrider and its underrepresented community.[1]
Early Life and Education
[edit]Jacqueline Valenzuela was born and raised in East Los Angeles, California as the youngest of four children.[2] As a child to her immigrant parents, her work focuses on the Chicana subculture as well as her interest in women low riders.[2][1] For further education, Valenzuela attended California State University Long Beach and graduated in 2019 with a degree in Drawing and Painting[2]
Art
[edit]Valenzuela has been obtaining awards like the Best Collab Zine 2022.[3] grants, curator experience, presence in exhibitions and much more since 2019.[3]
She often uses materials like acrylic paint, oil paint, gold leaf, and airbrush are used in her art along with assemblage and automotive paint techniques.[4]
Selected Works:
[edit]Jealousy: This work by Jacqueline Valenzuela was made in 2019, using oil and pastel on canvas. This piece was displayed in the Brea gallery.[5] It features a girl wearing sunglasses walking her big black dog, surrounded by pixels of vivid springtime colors. The graffiti in the artwork is extremely prevalent through her hometown, East Los Angeles. [5][6]
Forever: This oil painting on canvas made in 2023 features candles of Jesus as well as La Virgen de Guadalupe (The Virgin of Guadalupe) along with slightly wilted flowers. The top of the painting has her signature pixel blocks of the overall featured color scale. It pays homage to altars that are built on streets when a life is taken and it is a reminder of love that people have felt for the individual.[7]
Candy Painted Dream: This piece was created in 2023 and is a portrait of the artist, Jacqueline Valenzuela. The art shows her holding onto the side of a colorful abstract portrayal of a lowrider painted in purples and pinks within a golden background. It is decorated with shapes and flecks of white paint. Like the name of her artwork, Valenzuela is shown dreaming. The piece was made out of automotive paint, candy, flake, one shot & polyurethane on a wooden panel and it was displayed in the Eastern Projects gallery.[8][9]
She has had three solo exhibitions Bajito Y Suavecito, Sunday Service, and Chick Habit in 2020, 2023, and 2024.[10]
Valenzuela has an upcoming solo exhibition in Fall 2024 with the Bakersfield Museum of Art.
