About the event

[edit]

The London Mathematical Society is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2015, and as part of the Northern Regional Meeting and Workshop at Lancaster University, we will be hosting a Wikipedia edit-a-thon. It will take place on the afternoon of 8th April 2015. The session will begin with a short talk about editing basics, and experienced Wikipedians will be available to provide assistance and answer questions throughout. The goal of the afternoon will be to have conference participants improve some Wikipedia articles related to mathematics. Since the conference is in celebration of the LMS, in addition to improving mathematical content, we would also welcome changes to articles relating to British mathematics and its history!

How do I prepare?
  • Create a Wikipedia account beforehand - en:Special:UserLogin/signup
  • Consider bringing your own laptop (wi-fi will be provided); there will also be computers in the room
  • Learn about editing if you like: Wikipedia:Tutorial, or Getting started on Wikipedia for more information
  • Think about what you would like to edit; then you could gather some relevant source material to bring with you on the day (such as papers or books)

Some articles needing creation, updating and/or editing

[edit]
Add articles as appropriate. If you are currently working on an article listed below, please sign your name next to it.
  1. London Mathematical Society - Could be expanded using the sources above
  2. De Morgan Medal - Could be expanded using the sources above
  3. Homotopical algebra - Could be expanded; this short article is mostly unchanged since 2004
  4. Derived algebraic geometry - Could be expanded; this short article was written about a year ago by one person
  5. Monad (category theory) - Could be updated and improved; article is mostly unchanged since 2006
  6. Simplicial commutative ring - Could be expanded, and references improved; it was written in 2013 by one person
  7. Special values of L-functions - Written in 2009; Beilinson conjectures currently redirects there; could be expanded using the multiple reviews about the Beilinson conjectures; see also Beilinson regulator; nowhere are the conjectures actually stated
  8. Deligne cohomology - Could be expanded; written in 2011
  9. Pre-Lie algebra - Could be expanded; written in early 2011

Lists of mathematics articles in need of attention

[edit]
  1. Wikipedia:Requested articles/Mathematics - A list of hundreds of requested mathematics articles (roughly sorted by subject); these either need to be redirected to the appropriate article, or a new article needs to be created
  2. Wikipedia:Requested articles/Mathematics#Mathematicians - A subsection of the above, specifically for requested articles about mathematicians
  3. Category:Abstract algebra stubs - List of very short Abstract algebra articles that you could expand
  4. Category:Topology stubs - List of very short Topology articles that you could expand
  5. Wikipedia:Pages needing attention/Mathematics - A very long list of mathematics articles which are sorted by the type of issue the article has (i.e. articles lacking sources, articles lacking context, confusing articles, etc)
