[edit]From Proto-Dravidian *kōṭṭay (“wall”). Cognate with Kolami కోట (kōṭa), Kannada ಕೋಟೆ (kōṭe), Malayalam കോട്ട (kōṭṭa), Tulu ಕೋಟೆ (kōṭe), Telugu కోట (kōṭa). Akin to Sanskrit कोट्ट (koṭṭa), कोट (koṭa), a Dravidian borrowing.
