Derived from 余 (yú) and 舍 (shè). The character was differentiated from these two characters around the time of the Han dynasty, possibly a Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *ɦlja) : semantic 人 (“person”) + phonetic 示 (OC *ɡle, *ɢljils).
