Etymology
[edit]Etymology tree
According to Uṇ. iv, 144 an inner-Sanskrit derivation from the root कृ (kṛ, “to do, make, perform etc.”) + -मन् (-man). If inherited from Proto-Indo-European *kʷérmn̥, the paradigm must have been leveled from the weak stem, e.g. Proto-Indo-Iranian *čárma, *kr̥mán- > Proto-Indo-Aryan *kárma, *kárman-.
