From Dutch Antarctica, from New Latin Antarctica, from Ancient Greek ἀνταρκτικός (antarktikós), from ἀντ- (ant-, ant-, against, opposed) + ἀρκτικός (arktikós, Arctic), from Ancient Greek ἄρκτος (árktos, bear). The spelling change in Indonesian was proposed/accepted in January 2017 by Adi Budiwiyanto, previously spelled as Antartika.
