Turkish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Ottoman Turkish بیرام (bayram), from Proto-Turkic *badram (“feast”).
Nişanyan and Clauson suggests a borrowing from Iranian source,[1][2] despite Dīwān Lughāt al-Turk stating a Turkic etymology.[3] See the reconstruction page for more.
Alternatively, related to Proto-Mongolic *bayar (“joy”), whence also Mongolian баяр (bajar).
Cognate with Tatar бәйрәм (bäyräm), Kazakh мейрам (meiram), Kyrgyz майрам (mayram), Khakas пайрам (payram), Bashkir байрам (bayram), Azerbaijani bayram, etc.
