Los holoterios (Holotheria) son un clado de rango superior[1], está designado como un taxón basado en nodos, agrupando al último ancestro común entre Kuehneotherium y Theria, el grupo se caracteriza por el inicio de la triangulación de una dentadura triconodonta típica en morganucodontos, hacia una simetrodonta;[2] esta triangulación ocurre convergentemente en Docodontiformes.[3] En un principio se pensó que el grupo estaba dentro del grupo corona de mamíferos, con un grupo dentro de Pan-Theria[4], luego de que Kuehneotheriidae se formara[5] y empezara a sospecharse una relación con Pan-Monotremata, el grupo de holoterios se convertiría en sinónimo de Mammalia sensu stricto,[6] pero al final de análisis que señalaron que los kuehneotéridos son un grupo externo pero estrechamente relacionado al grupo corona de mamíferos,[7] análisis de reloj molecular,[8][9] y la expulsión de Allotheria del grupo corona, favorecieron el reuso de Holotheria como un clado externo de Mammalia corona.[10]
