Kekaisaran Bizantium diperintah oleh kaisar dari dinasti Heraclius antara tahun 610 dan 711. Heraclius dan para penerusnya memimpin dalam rentang waktu yang penuh gejolak, menjadi titik balik dalam sejarah Kekaisaran dan dunia. Heraclius, pendiri dinasti ini, berasal dari keturunan Armenia dan Cappadocian (Yunani). Pada awal dinasti ini, budaya Kekaisaran masih secara esensial Romawi Kuno, mendominasi wilayah Mediterania dan menaungi peradaban perkotaan Akhir Kuno yang makmur. Dunia ini hancur oleh invasi berturut-turut, yang menyebabkan kehilangan wilayah yang luas, kehancuran finansial, dan wabah penyakit yang merenggut penduduk kota, sementara kontroversi keagamaan dan pemberontakan lebih lanjut melemahkan Kekaisaran.
