Brīvmūrnieki ir viena no senākajām organizācijām mūsdienu pasaulē, kas kultivē un attīsta brālības, indivīda brīvības un cilvēciskas iecietības idejas. Rakstiskajos avotos ir norādes par daudzu cilvēku piederību šai diskrētajai brālībai, kas ne vienmēr ir dokumentāli apstiprināmas. Pašā brīvmūrnieku organizācijā nepastāv strikts aizliegums publiski deklarēt savu piederību brīvmūrniekiem, kaut arī tā ir katra brīva izvēle to darīt vai nē. Tomēr nav atļauts publiskot kāda cita brīvmūrnieka vārdu bez viņa piekrišanas. Sabiedrībā vienmēr ir bijusi noteikta interese par brīvmūrnieku sarakstiem un ir pat izdotas veselas grāmatas ar šādiem sarakstiem. Diemžēl bieži vien šajos sarakstos ir ļoti daudz kļūdu un neprecizitāšu. Orts kļūdu iemesls ir tas, ka pastāv vairākas ļoti atšķirīgas sabiedriskās strāvas, kas sevi dēvē par brīvmūrniekiem, kaut arī tās viena otru par tādām neatzīst. Brīvmūrnieka nosaukums nav nekādi likumiski regulēts, tādēļ neviens brīvmūrnieku saraksts nekad nevar būt pilnīgs, patiess un nekļūdīgs. Zemāk esošais saraksts ir veidots no pieejamajiem rakstiskajiem avotiem un arhīvos un muzejos glabātajiem ložu biedru sarakstiem. Jebkuriem papildinājumiem vajadzētu dot pienācīgas atsauces.
