African Librarians Week/African Librarians Week 2023

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
The 4th African Librarians Week which is an integral part of the global 1Librarian 1Reference campaign has brought African librarians together every last part of May since 2020. The African Librarians Week is anchored by AfLIA . This year's campaign will run from 14th - 26th May, 2023. The theme for 2023 is - African Knowledge to the World.
Creating awareness about African Librarians Week 2023

African librarians will use that opportunity to fill knowledge gaps about Africa and Africans on Wikipedia by adding missing citations, enriching articles and making corrections where necessary to ensure that African knowledge in Wikipedia is accurate and up to date. Using the hashtag #AfLibWk as well as #1Lib1Ref,

The 2023 African librarians Week also offers the African Library sector a unique opportunity to promote the open knowledge ecosystem through Wikipedia and sister projects as that time window calls the attention of everyone within that sector to make African history, culture, ethos, our meanings, and our realities more visible and easily grafted into the global body of knowledge. This year, due to the ongoing course on "Promoting Open Knowledge practices in African Libraries through WikiData", contributions on Wikidata will also be tracked through the use of #AfLIbWk and #1Lib1Ref hashtags.

Events and Participation

[edit]

A number of activities have been planned to prepare all professionals in the African Library sector to participate fully in the Week whether they have been editing before or if the 2023 African Librarians Week will be their first time to work on Wikipedia and Wikidata. The activities include; a webinar by Silvia Gutiérrez on evaluating the role of Wikimedia projects in opening up knowledge. Other hands-on virtual training will be on Collaborative digital skills for opening up African knowledge through Wikimedia projects in English and French.
