New GLAM partnerships on data donation; Commons structured data edit-a-thon

New GLAM partnerships on data donation

In August 2020, Wikimedia Indonesia signed a memorandum of understanding with Lembaga Pendidikan Seni Nusantara dan Yayasan Tikar Media Budaya Nusantara on data donation from the institutions. This collaboration will bring new content on Wikimedia Commons in the form of audios, videos, pictures, and documents which are related to Indonesian arts and cultures. The process of importing the data to Commons will be done in October 2020, ensuring the preparations from their side is completed.

Not only Lembaga Pendidikan Seni Nusantara dan Yayasan Tikar Media Budaya Nusantara, D'Topeng Kingdom Foundation also joined us in the same partnership. D'Topeng Kingdom Foundation is an organization which oversees several local GLAM institutions in several places in Indonesia, such as Indonesian Islamic Art Museum, Indonesian Heritage Museum, and History of Java Museum. These museums are with a good grace donated the photographs of museum objects to Commons to enrich Indonesian heritage in Internet. Besides, the photographs will be included in Retas Budaya Festival this month, an event conducted by Goethe-Institut Indonesian in collaboration with Directorate General of Culture, Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia, Wikimedia Indonesia, Asosiasi Game Indonesia (Indonesian Game Association), Elex Media Komputindo, and Indonesian Institute of Sciences.

Commons structured data edit-a-thon

In August, Wikimedia Indonesia and Wikimedia Nederland has been working together in the theme of "October History Month". One initiative is to make more content available through Wikimedia, the content that is relevant to Indonesian history which is housed in Dutch cultural collections available through Wikimedia.

Wikimedia Nederland has been helping to put hundreds of photographs and videos related to Indonesia pre- and post-independence into Wikimedia Commons. A set of photographs of Padang and Yogyakarta from the collection of Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies currently kept by Leiden University Library is now available. Also, video materials produced by the propaganda department of the Japanese military administration during the Pacific War, when the former Dutch East Indies were occupied by Japan are now on Commons thanks to Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid (Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision). Not only those pictures and videos, Nationaal Museum van Wereldculturen (National Museum of World Cultures) put hundreds of their photograph collections depicting Indonesia pre- and post-independence.

To help the collections more searchable, Wikimedia Indonesia set a campaign inviting Wikimedians in Indonesia to add structured data to each file. This data consist of caption and depicts (P180). If you are interested to contribute, you can start at this ISA campaign.
