Edit-a-thons on women scientists and painters
WikiGap Science Week
In the context of the #WikiGap campaign, in which Wikimedia España has been participating since 2018, during the month of November we have celebrated a new edition, this time on the occasion of the Science and Innovation Week in Madrid. In addition to our usual collaborator, the Swedish Embassy in Spain, the Madri+d Foundation, the Autonomous University of Madrid and the Consorcio Madroño have joined the organization of the event.
The edit-a-thon has consisted of four sessions, every Thursday in November, at 6:00 pm, each focused on a different topic. Thus, in the first session, broadcast live on YouTube, in addition to the welcome from the organizing institutions, there was an inspiring talk on women and science and an introductory workshop on editing on Wikipedia. The second session was dedicated to Wikimedia Commons and the uploading and use of archives, the third one on the creation and improvement of articles in Wikipedia and the fourth was dedicated to the translation of articles in Wikipedia. The Consorcio Madroño, a consortium of universities of the Community of Madrid and the UNED for library cooperation, collaborated with the elaboration of the list of scientists in addition to providing basic information about each one of them.
During those weeks, the participants worked on their articles and, in addition to the sessions themselves, had a Telegram channel, created specifically for the event, to receive support from experienced users. A total of 29 articles were edited, 28 of which were new. The results of the event were disseminated through a presentation, also broadcast live, during the researchers' night, held at the Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid.
Invitadas: more women painters in Wikipedia
Between October 2020 and March 2021, the Museo del Prado is presenting the exhibition Invitadas. Fragmentos sobre mujeres, ideología y artes plásticas en España (1833-1931) (Invited: Fragments on Women, Ideology and the Plastic Arts in Spain (1833-1931)), the first exhibition organized by the Museo del Prado after its post-pandemic reopening. The exhibition aims to offer a reflection on the way in which the established powers defended and propagated the role of women in society through the visual arts, from the reign of Isabel II to that of her grandson Alfonso XIII.
On the occasion of this exhibition, the first collaboration between the museum and Wikimedia España has been developed, and it has consisted of an edit-a-thon with the aim of incorporating the voices of the women painters, who are part of the exhibition, about whom there was little information or who did not have an article yet, into the free encyclopedia. The museum provided materials to the participants so that they could use them as sources, and uploaded a set of images, both from the exhibition and from the works of the painters, to Wikimedia Commons, to facilitate their use in Wikimedia projects.
The event was held online and consisted of two sessions. In the first, of a formative nature, in addition to the welcome and contextualization by the Museum, the basic guidelines for editing in Wikipedia were presented and it was explained how to collect references and information for the participants to start working on the proposed biographical articles. In the second session, the participants proceeded to edit, solve doubts and publish the contents in Wikipedia. In addition, between sessions, participants had a Telegram channel where they could receive help from experienced users. In total, 26 articles were edited, 17 of which were new, and the museum uploaded 66 images.
