Edit-a-thon & editing challenges
Edit-a-thon in Mendoza
In coordination with Wikimedia Chile we held a workshop in the University of UNCuyo, Mendoza. The main objetive of this meeting was to give and introduction to wiki philosophy to the audience who was part of the week of arts. After that Wikimedia Argentina and Wikimedia Chile made an edit-a-thon of the culture of the region. From these activities came out 12 new articles, one improved and an enthusiasm group of people who wants to continue producing activities independently.
Editing Challenges
WMAR launched two contests edition in collaboration with the network Iberocoop. One of the challenges was to reference articles without reference, the second challenge was to edit articles of Museum of Argentina.
Activities against the law of copyright extension
Wikimedia Argentina would like to express their concern at the draft law , supported by the deputy Mazure , which seeks to extend the copyright on the photographs of the current 20 years since the publication to 70 since the death of the author.
For this reason we are promoting a series of actions to counter the enactment of this law. First we generate a change request to stop the advance of law and we made an explanatory video in which the president of the Wikimedia Foundation explains what might be the impact of this proyect.
Flemish institutions start with Wikidata project
Linked Open Data via Wikidata
PACKED vzw started, with support from Wikimedia and its users, the project Linked Open Data via Wikidata in what cultural institutions start working with Wikidata. The project exists out of:
- A white paper is written about Wikidata. The document describes how data can be added to Wikidata, what the benefits are, best practices, user cases, and more.
- Participating partner organisations provide a CSV dataset with their art works.
- This dataset will be added to Wikidata under a CC0 license.
- The partner organisations receive back an RDF export with their data.
Also three YouTube videos have been created to explain the project:
PACKED vzw is in Flanders the centre of expertise "in centring the development of knowledge, experience and expertise regarding digitisation and digital archiving, and in spreading the acquired knowledge, experience and expertise". They work together with the various institutes and organisations in Flanders that have the intention to take care of cultural heritage. (more info)
From Brittany to Provence
First sound edit-a-thon EVER for Wikimédia France !
Enhancing sound archives on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons library is the common goal that set for themselves both Wikimedia France and the Mediterranean House of Human Sciences (MMSH), supported by the Europeana Sounds program. On October 23, 20 people - librarians, archivists, librarians, researchers, civil society actors, etc., as well as 3 Wikipedia editors - met in Aix-en-Provence, in the premises of MMSH. During one day, participants looked at three sound corpus of testimonials, collected by academics and respectively focused on the memory of the Armenians in the Bouches-du-Rhône, Italian immigrants from Marseille neighbourhoods and Greeks refugees in Syros. With the help of Wikipedians, participants added extracts of these testimonials (which were first uploaded on Wikimedia Commons) to articles of the encyclopedia, to illustrate them. Two articles were also created : the first one on Oddo camp, which hosted Armenian refugees in the 1920s, the second and third on the American orphanage in Syros.
Wiki takes botany ! (*spoiler alert* and archeology, as you'll read further below!)
On October 15, Wikimedians from Brest who edited Wikipedia articles about endangered plant species during the summer, organised a dedicated evening to share this experience. Hosted by the "Conservatoire Botanique National" of Brest (one of the 11 national botanic conservatory of France), which is officially in charge of protecting the threatened or protected plants in the Massif Armoricain area (a territory that includes the Brittany regions, Basse-Normandie and Pays de la Loire) the conference gathered about 25 people who came to discover this action and its results. The evening was also the occasion for Wikimédia France to sign a partnership agreement with the Conservatory, thus envisioning other initiatives. Pictures taken in the tropical greenhouses of the conservatory were displayed. Special attention was given to the Wikipedia article of the Micromeria glomerata that was created in only one day by Tsaag Valren, an editor from Josselin, currently requesting the vote of the Wikipedian community to label it "Good article".
Wiki Loves Monuments 2015
French Wikimedians took part in the 5th edition of the Wiki Loves Monuments contest. They gathered more than 12 000 pictures, and this year, the competition also included "big objects" listed in the Palissy database, and considered as cultural heritage as well. The award ceremony will take place on November 20th in Paris, at the Conciergerie, an extraordinary venue !
Wiki takes archeology
The Musée d'archéologie nationale is located in Saint-Germain-en-Laye (in the western suburb of Paris). Consisting of 19 rooms, it presents archaeological collections retracing the life of men on French territory from prehistory to the Middle Ages. Nearly 30,000 objects are on display, reflecting the evolution of techniques and artistic expression. The museum also hosts outstanding compared archeology collections or archaeological objects found outside of France, in the former Ballroom of the castle. Also called Comedy Lab, this is where were created many works by Lully, Molière ...and so on. ArkéoTopia went there for a one-day workshop to try and build the first steps of an initiative aiming at improving Wikipedia articles about the history of the National Museum of Archaeology, its collections, the history of the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
International festival of geography 2015
Once again, Wikimedians from the East of France (and elsewhere) were there to attend and take part in the Festival International de Géographie, one of the major geography-related event in the world. The theme of the 2015 edition of the International Festival of Geography was "Territories of the Imagination, Utopia, representation and Prospective", and the guest country was Australia. More than 25 different personalities were portrayed during this event: geographers, journalists, writers, politicians… A stand was also held by Wikimedians and more than 100 persons were informed on Wikimedia projects during these three days.
5th batch upload for the French national Archives
Jean-Fred completed the 5th upload for the National French Archives, which included unique documents in French history, such as this study for the Arch of Triumph, in Paris.

- The first training of GLAM agents from Isère thanks to the Grenoble local group !
- The interview and recording of Marie-Adèle, a kanak language speaker from New Caledonia in Paris
- A workshop on how to use and contribute to Wikipedia in the Université Montaigne located in Bordeaux, around the figure of Félix Arnaudin, a poet and photographer whose collection is currently in the Musée d'Aquitaine.
The history of Fascism in Italian libraries
Mussolini Digital Library
During this month, mostly dedicated to WLM work, a new project with libraries was announced too. The Fondazione Casa Oriani Contemporary History Library in Ravenna, dating back to 1927, holds in its collection the Mussolini Library, a unique collection of historical books and periodicals of the time, both in favour and against the regime.
The Library, in its ongoing work of the collection rearrangement, decided to digitize and upload to Internet Archive and Italian Wikisource as many books and magazines as possible, beginning from the texts you can see here, a work from Quaderni fascisti collection, and Gioventù italiana del littorio by the secretary of the Fascist Party during the Thirties Achille Starace.
Mussolini Library (the original historical name of Oriani Library) is one of the most relevant source of information about fascism period and ideology in Italy, and the digitazion of its materials is supposed to be very useful for historians all over the world.
Moreover, the fact that a GLAM-wiki project comes together with the main process of reorganization of the collection by the Library, is for us an important sign of interest from Italian libraries and a model to follow for others too in the future.
The project was officially presented to the public on October 17th in Ravenna, and mentioned in the press.
Wikipedian in residence at the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts
After several months of negotiations and pending for the approval, Shared Knowledge introduced its second Wikimedian-in-residence at the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MANU) in the person of Mario Šarevski (user Македонец). The Memorandum of collaboration was signed on 1 October 2015. Considering the importance of this undertaking and its impact for the public, this collaboration between Shared Knowledge and Macedonia's highest scientific institution was widely announced throughout Macedonian media including the item on Macedonian national television, several newspapers and news portals.
A regular day in the MANU Library
Our Wikimedian-in-residence, Mr. Šarevski, is already a volunteer MANU Library, and is constantly using materials for editing articles on Wikipedia, increasing the volume and pace. The library's fund includes more than 160.000 units of which 56.310 books and 110.000 volumes of journals from different fields of sciences and arts. Having this in mind, the work of Wikimedian-at-residence is of great importance for making valuable contributions to Wikipedia with accurate, reliable and scientifically sound referenced information and data on various topics. Moreover, our Wikimedian-at-residence has provided a few hard copies of the book Atomic Physics published by MANU for the needs and work of the project Educational programme 15/16 and Shared Knowledge. He has also signed an agreement that the MANU Library in the future, will also provide its publications for permanent possession for the needs of the projects of Shared Knowledege and Wikipedia. Beside the constant help from Library employees that provide the books, documents, photos and materials, our Wikimedian-at-residence has direct contact with the academicians, scholars and scientists at the institution. In the three resident weeks so far, Wikipedia has at least a dozen new or improved articles with files uploaded on different themes such as geography, physics, archaeology, ethnology, history etc.

GLAMing Madrid
On October, GLAMing Madrid project continued. The museums have a calendar of activities in each one and, for example, in this month were held four Wikipedia training sessions in the threee museums, which received a high participation, mostly female, with an important number of new editors. As well, we started the selection of images for Wikimedia Commons and it was recorded a concert of classical music, at Museum of Romanticism, having meetings with the musicians of November´s concerts. By last, it was held, on October 17, an triedit-a-thon at National Archaeological Museum, with the participation of the three museums.
Libraries
The activity in libraries has been intense. In Pravia (Asturias) were held two sessions about Wikimedia Commons for librarians; in Badajoz, at Public Library, was celebrated another Wikipedia session; and in Valladolid, at Reina Sofía Library, of the University of Valladolid, started the fifth edition of the Wikipedia course, with a high participation.
Free images
Wikimedia Spain continued obtaining images under a free license. In this month, we got images from the Princess of Asturias Awards Ceremony, in Oviedo, due to the award for Wikipedia, and, one more year, from the Seminci (Valladolid International Film Festival), getting high-value images of actors and filmmakers. As well, the city council of Lanciego/Lantziego uploaded to Commons five images under a free license.

Real Academia Española
On October 7 was signed a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the Real Academia Española to iniciate a collaboration for generate content about the institution, the academics and the Spanish language, and get images and documents under a free license. Besides, Wikimedia Spain was invited to the presentation of the new Dictionary of the Real Academia and also to the presentation of the new Diccionario Panhispánico de Términos Médicos of Real Academia Nacional de Medicina.
X International Seminar about Language and Journalism
Wikimedia Spain was invited to the 10th International Seminar about Language and Journalism celebrated in San Millán de la Cogolla, where the first texts in Spanish and Basque were written. The seminar had a discussion about manual of styles on the net, and the president of Wikimedia Spain introduced this topic.
55 000+ links to Wikipedia; Exhibits, concepts and biographies
55 000+ links to Wikipedia
VISS, a national water body database in Sweden have started to include links from their pages to Wikipedia about the corresponding article. It is mostly lakes, and it is following the bot creation of the lakes on Swedish Wikipedia about the lakes. This was made by User:Nasko in 2013. They also include images from Wikipedia if any are available. Example: [1].
Exhibits, concepts and biographies
October marked the start of the project Wikimedia Sweden and the Swedish Exhibition Agency are running together this fall. During October two edit-a-thons were held, and some new articles about exhibitions created. An editor Mikael Edborg hired to write new and expand articles about different exhibition concepts got a good start by using a sandbox and getting experienced editors to comment and do some copy/editing before moving them to main namespace. The first article, Basutställning, was expanded from two lines and no sources to over 5000 byte and ten sources. More work is done to the list of concepts, and also to the lists of exhibitions and names related to exhibitions.
'Hywel Dda' edit-a-thon & Pic-a-thon
Wales
The residency at the National Library of Wales continues to progress well. This month we held a public 'Hywel Dda' edit-a-thon to work on content relating to the ancient Welsh law system. Tempted by cake and a chance to examine a copy of one of the original Medieval manuscript, the event was well attended by academics from Swansea and Aberystwyth Universities as well as Library staff and volunteers. We have now switched to training all new editors with the visual editor, to great applause. A staff 'Pic-a-thon' was also held this month resulting in 200 articles about Welsh places getting pictures for the first time, and whilst Wikipedia celebrates it's 5 millionth article, the National Library of Wales are celebrating reaching 10 Million views of pages containing its images. Finally I have to thank the team who hosted the Wikidata training day at Wikimedia UK headquarters this month. My mind has been opened to a world of possibilities!

GLAM Cafe, Ada Lovelace Day, AIA Women in Architecture
October was a tremendously busy month, with WikiConference USA at the U.S. National Archives in Washington, D.C. on October 9-11, 2015. Great job, everybody! The invited speakers were excellent, and there was lots of great discussion.
In Philadelphia, there were a number of events throughout the month. The GLAM Cafe at the Chemical Heritage Foundation was opportunely timed to occur on October 13, 2015, Ada Lovelace Day. We focused on editing women in science articles. Recent Women in Science/Women in Red articles have included Florence E. Wall, a cosmetics chemist, and Gladys W. Royal, an early African American chemist and inter-racial civil rights activist. We were delighted to welcome 2 new Wikipedians, in addition to regulars. We also enjoyed a special Ada Lovelace Day cake.
At the invitation of staff at the AIA Philadelphia Center for Architecture, we held an edit-a-thon as part of the Women in Architecture initiative, on Thursday, October 15, 2015. Ten people attended, five of whom were new editors, and 5 new articles were created. These included the Pennsylvania School of Horticulture for Women (which had one of the earliest landscape architecture programs) and several women architects. Thanks go out to Karen Blanchard, Rebecca Esau, Alesa Rubendall and others who helped to organize and host this event. This was a great group to work with: people were engaged and knew what they wanted to achieve, and I hope we will be able to do more with them in future.

There was an edit-a-thon on each Monday in October at the Wikipedia Lab at the University of Washington Research Commons. The edit-a-thons focused on Women and Economics, Women and Astronomy, Women and Health Sciences, and Women and Technology.

From October 19-25, Open Access Week took place globally. Of the many events organized on the occasion, some had a Wikimedia component, e.g. in the form of edit-a-thons in Stockholm, Boulder or online.

- Mobile device users are now redirected to the mobile view automatically (example)
- Mix n Match is now available for mobile
- Wikispecies now has access to sitelinks on Wikidata (as do the Meta and MediaWiki project wikis) - not just for taxons, but for repositories, journals and for biographies of taxonomists
- A new Special:Nearby feature shows items with coordinates, near to the user's location
- 'Harvest templates' - useful new tool to copy data from templates on a Wikipedia, or other sister projects, to Wikidata.
