Wikimedian in Residence at Elbasan’s Ethnographic Museum in Albania
Silva Belegu served as the Wikimedian in Residence (WiR) at the Ethnographic Museum in Elbasan, Albania spanning from July to September 2024.
Over the course of the project, Silva worked for 3 months to bring the museum’s rich history, artifacts, people, traditional clothes, and ethnography of this area across Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata.
The outcomes were satisfactory by adding/improving 51 edited articles covering most of the Elbasan’s traditional crafts to local folklore. 33 photos of museum artifacts were uploaded on Wikimedia Commons giving people access to authentic pieces of history and 200 items were added to Wikidata ensuring detailed information about the museum’s collections.
The Wikimedian in Residence placed at the Ethnographic Museum highlights for the Wikimedians of Albanian Language UG a valuable partnership between the Culture Heritage Institutions and the Wikipedian community in Albania.
With this project wrapped up, we have already started a new project with another Wikimedian in Residence at the Qemal Baholli Public Library in Elbasan for the third year in a row.

GLAM and communities
Finding new topics
Since July, Wikimedia Argentina has been collaborating with Wikimedistas UNLP and WikiAcción Perú in a pilot proposal about archeological heritage and open knowledge. The aim is to start thinking on respectful ways of making arqueological content (mainly photos of objetcs, pieces, places) accesible in the wikimedia projects while at the same time they improve Wikipedia related articles. So far, more than 100 people have participated virtually, mainly people related to archeology, antorpology, archives and indigenous communities. In the third and last session, participants will learn how to upload content and improve structured data so images are more findable and information more accurate.
Supporting "Seraxañí" project
After years of working together, community member Shailili Zamora Aray applied for a rapid grant to develop her own wiki project in Chaco province, Argentina. Her goal was to improve wikidata and wikicommons content related to wichí indigenous people. Angie Cervellera joined onsite activities helping with organization and carrying out several workshops, aimed for students and teachers linked with the wichí talking community. This was a very interesting experience as it helped us understand how to engage with this community, what does it matter to them, what do they learn easily and what is really difficult about wikimedia ecosystem. We will share more results soon!
Building community
From July to now, we've been designing several activities to engage different communities:
- For librarians, we've worked with Editorial y Casa Ampersand to offer a two-day onsite session about editing Wikipedia and adding references using book collections in the library, specially those referred to written culture history.
- For local communities we carried out virtual events to work with digitized content with all the wiki projects (Concordia City, Entrerríos), use wikidata to search for turistic information (Rosario city, Santa Fe) and at the moment, to learn registering and sharing local heritage (Córdoba province) in Wikimedia Commons.
- For museum related professionals we participated from the international CECA LAC (ICOM) meeting in Neuquén city introducing the Código Cultura working experience with one of our community members, Sol Cabezas.
- We continued offering the thematic Desafío GLAM for wikimedians to contribute to Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons with small but powerful edits.
Artbank's edit-a-thon for gender equity in Australian visual arts
In September, Artbank Sydney’s vibrant gallery space transformed into a dynamic hub of creativity, knowledge-sharing, and digital activism. The occasion? A highly successful edit-a-thon focused on amplifying the voices of women and non-binary artists, showcasing their invaluable contributions to the Australian visual arts community.
The event brought together a diverse group of participants — seasoned Wikipedians, enthusiastic newcomers, artists, and advocates—all united by a shared goal: to close the gender gap on Wikipedia, one edit at a time.
Held in the gallery space at Artbank Sydney, the energy in the room was tangible, as keyboards clicked and conversations flowed, creating an atmosphere of collaboration and learning.
Why Artbank and Women and Non-Binary Artists?
Despite their profound impact on the art world, women and non-binary artists remain significantly underrepresented on Wikipedia. This edit-a-thon was part of a broader movement to change that, ensuring these artists receive the recognition they deserve. Participants learnt the basics of editing Wikipedia, and then worked tirelessly to create and improve articles, highlighting these artists' contributions and affirming their importance within the cultural landscape. By holding the edit-a-thon in partnership with Artbank, Wikimedia Australia has supported Artbank's objective of promoting the value of Australian contemporary art to the broader public.
The Power of the Countess Report
A key resource during the edit-a-thon was the Countess Report, a vital tool that tracks gender representation in Australian contemporary art. This report, instrumental in spotlighting disparities in the art world, guided participants in identifying which artists required improved coverage on Wikipedia.
We were privileged to have Elvis Richardson, one of the authors of the Countess Report, attend the edit-a-thon and share insights into the challenges and barriers facing women and non-binary artists. After the edit-a-thon, Elvis spoke at the “Equalessable” exhibition opening in the Artbank gallery space.
A Day of Learning and Collaboration
One of the most inspiring aspects of the edit-a-thon was the spirit of collaboration. Experienced editors shared their knowledge with beginners, guiding them through the intricacies of Wikipedia editing. Artists and curators provided insights into the work and significance of the featured artists, enriching the content being added. This exchange of ideas and skills was a reminder of the power of community-driven initiatives.
Looking Ahead
Although this was our first event with Artbank, its impact was clear: an engaged group committed to raising awareness of the underrepresentation of women and non-binary artists, and a strong sense of accomplishment among all participants. But the work doesn’t end here. This edit-a-thon is just one step in an ongoing effort to ensure that Wikipedia reflects the diversity of voices in the art world.
The success of this event at Artbank is a testament to what can be achieved when people come together with a shared mission. It serves as a reminder that anyone can contribute to making the internet—and the world—a more inclusive place.

Project 'Belgian distilleries as Linked Open Data' completed
Project
Jenever distilleries in Belgium (2021-2024) is a project by the Jenevermuseum in Hasselt to describe jenever distilleries that have left their mark on the history of jenever production in Belgium on Wikimedia. With this project the Jenever Museum wanted to add, improve and/or further expand Wikipedia articles on distilleries to make the information accessible to the public. After 3 years the project is now completed and we can see the results.
The Jenevermuseum realized this project thanks to the support of the Flemish Government and in collaboration with Wikimedia Belgium, CAG, ETWIE, Histories, Hogeschool PXL and various heritage cells in Flanders.
Results
- First, the available metadata of 271 distilleries were published as Linked Open Data via Wikidata. You can find the list here.
- Secondly, the Jenever Museum, in collaboration with the partners, organised ten writing sessions or 'Distill-a-thons' spread across Flanders. During these sessions, 68 volunteers described the information of jenever distilleries on the Dutch Wikipedia. In total 72 Dutch articles and 2 French articles are published and 14 Dutch articles are updated. You can find the new articles under this category and subcategories. 31 articles are also published on the English Wikipedia. You can find them here.
- Thirdly, 147 photo files of the collection of the Jenevermuseum are uploaded regarding these distilleries. You can find them here.

Photowalks for Wiki Loves Monuments 2024 at five corners of Brazil
The Wiki Loves Monuments Brazil 2024 contest occurred between September 1st and 30th in Brazil and it counted more than 28 thousand images from 282 photographers.
On September 14th, 21st, and 28th, we brought together over 150 people in 17 municipalities across 11 states in all 5 regions of Brazil. Libraries, cultural centers, and cafes hosted experienced wikimedians and newcomers, who participated in photowalks to document local monuments.
Human actions and various types of events can lead many monuments to simply disappear. In Brazil, we strive for every citizen to see themselves as an agent of preservation of the memory and identity of their own city. Thus, with each photo and each byte, we manage to showcase a bit more of the wonderful cultural diversity that inhabits every corner of our country.
Wiki Movimento Brasil thanks everyone who organized and participated in the events, especially the institutions that welcomed us so warmly.

Egypt-a-thon at Eva Klabin
Egypt-a-thon at Eva Klabin was a Wikipedia editing marathon about Egyptian art organized by Wiki Movimento Brasil in partnership with Casa Museu Eva Klabin, a museum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that houses a classical art collection with more than 2,000 pieces, including artifacts from Ancient Egypt.
The event was inspired by the temporary exhibition “Eternal Egypt: Immortality in the Viscountess de Cavalcanti and Eva Klabin Collections” and, in addition to the marathon, involved the upload of more than 50 photographs of Ancient Egyptian artifacts from the institution's collection to Wikimedia Commons, including 11 3D models of some of these pieces, which can be rotated to view them in 360 degrees.
The event took place on Thursday, September 5, and brought together students, researchers, Wikipedians, and newcomers. Our goal with this initiative was to improve content in Portuguese about Egyptian art on the internet and highlight the historical significance of Brazilian collections on Wikipedia.

4th edition of the Label Culture Libre
4th edition of the Label Culture Libre
The Label Culture Libre returns on October 31. Cultural Institutions that have placed their collections under free licenses and contributed at least once to Wikimedia projects will be able to apply for one of the 3 levels of the label. Wikimedia France is currently preparing this new edition to add new winners to the 24 existing institutions.
Digitization at the Museum of Santal Culture, Federation Hall Society Library and Cultural Heritage and Literature in Meghalaya
Museum of Santal Culture
The Museum of Santal Culture, located in the Santal village of Bishnubati, was inaugurated in 2007 with the financial help of the Indian Museum. Managed by the Bishnubati Adibasi Marshal Sangha, the museum preserves 150 items under six categories.
The West Bengal Wikimedians User Group is collaborating with the trust to digitize the museum collections through a GLAM partnership. Apart from photographing the collections, we are video recording the description of each item in Bangla and Santali, narrated by the museum curator and experts related to the items.

Federation Hall Society Library
Founded in 1905, the Federation Hall is a heritage building and nationalist institution of British India. It is also known as Milan Mandir, a name proposed by Sister Nivedita.
The century-old library of the Federation Hall Society houses many rare books and magazines. The West Bengal Wikimedians User Group have started the digitization process of the out-of-copyright books in this library.
Digitisation & Documentation of Cultural Heritage and Literature in Meghalaya
The Digitisation & Documentation of Cultural Heritage and Literature in Meghalaya project is a collaborative initiative funded by NECTAR and implemented by the Centre for Internet and Society (CIS) in partnership with Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama Sohra and the West Bengal Wikimedians User Group (WBG). Launched in January 2023, this initiative aims to digitize and make accessible the rich cultural heritage of Meghalaya's Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo communities. By collaborating with local organizations like the Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama Sohra, Jeebon Roy Memorial Trust Library in Shillong and Vintage Museum in Sohra, the project seeks to ensure that valuable cultural resources—such as manuscripts, books, and audio files—are freely available on Wikimedia platforms.
In an era characterized by rampant misinformation, this project becomes particularly relevant. It aims to produce verifiable and reliable reference materials that enhance the quality of online content. The Wikimedia movement envisions a world where everyone has free access to the sum of all human knowledge. Through projects like Wikipedia, Wikisource, and Wikimedia Commons, it has fostered a global community of volunteers dedicated to this vision. This initiative not only aligns with that mission but also strengthens partnerships with local institutions to document tribal culture accurately.
As of September 2024, approximately 20,000 pages have been digitized, with 5,426 pages (41 books) uploaded onto Wikimedia Commons. Out of these 28 rare books are in Khasi language. A total of 337 photos and 25 videos have been documented and shared online. Skill training has been provided to 24 volunteers, enhancing local capacity for ongoing cultural documentation.
By training local volunteers in digital skills and engaging them in knowledge creation, the project empowers communities to contribute actively to the global knowledge ecosystem. This approach not only preserves cultural heritage but also enriches the collective understanding of diverse cultures worldwide, reinforcing the principles of openness and accessibility central to the open knowledge movement.

Report on the Wikidata WikiProject International Botanical 2024, Conference report for SPNHC-TDWG 2024 and the upcoming New Zealand species edit-a-thon
She successfully presented on the recently completed Wikidata WikiProject Te Papa Research expeditions. The slides and script of that presentation were uploaded both into Wikimedia Commons as well as published on Zenodo.
Ambrosia10 also produced a conference report reporting back to WANZ and the wider Wiki community on the sessions she attended and reporting back to WANZ and the Wiki related engagement undertaken at the Conference. This report was uploaded into Zenodo and can be read on that site.
The organisers of Wikidata WikiProject IBC 2024, which includes two New Zealand based editors Stitchbird2 and Ambrosia10 have completed a report on the WikiProject, outlining how it came about, its aims and outcomes. This report has been published on Zenodo and uploaded into Wikimedia Commons.
The organisers of the WikiProject have shared the report with the Wikimedia Foundation, with Lydia Pintscher (WMDE), Florencia Claes (President of Wikimedia España) and Victoria Leachman (President of Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand). We have emailed Wikimedia South Africa to encourage and offer support for that community to replicate this project in 2029. We also shared this report with the Wellington and New Zealand Wiki meet ups as well as with the Wikidata, GLAMwiki and Wikidata Biodiversity telegram groups. As a result of this Ambrosia10 has been invited to present on the WikiProject at the upcoming ESEAP meeting in November.
Three editors from Wellington, Stitchbird2, Ambrosia10 and Noracrentiss, are in the process of organising a New Zealand species editathon to be held at the botanic garden w:Ōtari-Wilton's Bush. This event runs over two Saturdays - Saturday 19 October 2024 and Saturday 2 November 2024. If Wikipedia editors are in Wellington on either of these days they are welcome to sign up for tickets here.
What's up in GLAM-Wiki in Poland
CEE Meeting 2024
At the CEE Meeting 2024, Kamila Neuman, Open Culture Manager at Wikimedia Polska, presented the challenges and opportunities related to organizing Wikipedia editing workshops for GLAM staff.
In her presentation, titled "Experiment, Fail, Learn: Innovative Strategies for Engaging Partner’s Staff in Wikipedia Editing" she emphasized that engaging cultural sector staff, despite many barriers (such as lack of time and numerous projects), brings significant benefits. The goal of the presentation was to inspire CEE Meeting participants to develop effective, practical strategies for involving GLAM staff in Wikipedia editing.
Kamila Neuman's second presentation at the CEE Meeting 2024, titled "Effective GLAM-Wiki Partnerships: Learning from Others' Mistakes with Limited Resources," focused on building successful partnerships even with limited resources by drawing on existing knowledge and the experiences of others.
Kamila emphasized that we don't need to "reinvent the wheel" when creating GLAM-Wiki partnerships. Instead, we can benefit from the wealth of experience accumulated within the Wikimedia movement. One of the biggest challenges, however, is navigating the vast amount of available knowledge and best practices. In this context, Kamila shared her most valuable information sources, which have proven useful in her own work. She highlighted the importance of finding relevant materials and adapting them to individual needs.
She also encouraged active participation in international meetings, where knowledge and experiences can be exchanged, and support from others can be sought. Sharing one's own insights can help in building better, more effective GLAM-Wiki partnerships.

The Czartoryski Library - A Division of the National Museum
In collaboration with the National Museum in Krakow, a new Wikiresidency has begun at the Czartoryski Library. This residency, led by Agata Stadnicka, focuses on making the library's valuable historical collection more accessible by digitizing and sharing it on Wikimedia Commons. The collection includes rare manuscripts, illuminated texts, and documents that date back centuries. Notable works include royal charters, treaties, and personal correspondence from figures like Nicolaus Copernicus and Fryderyk Chopin.
The Wikiresidency is part of a broader project to renovate and modernize the library, turning it into a "wiki-friendly" space for knowledge seekers. Over the coming years, the project will involve digitizing the library's resources and expanding related content on Wikipedia and its sister projects. The first phase includes training library staff in Wikipedia editing, using their expertise to enhance high-quality content related to the collection.
As part of the residency, public events and workshops will be held, inviting both the museum team and the wider Wikimedia community to engage with this extraordinary collection.
The project is co-funded by the European Union as part of the European Regional Development Fund, supporting the renovation and modernization efforts.

In September, Wojciech Szczęsny, Wikipedian in Residence at the National Library in Warsaw, illustrated Wikipedia articles and Wikidata elements using files from Polona. In total, he added 738 images. These included views of towns and villages from Poland and the pre-war Kresy region, as well as ethnographic photographs.
A significant portion of the files consisted of photographs by Henryk Poddębski, one of the most important travel photographers of the interwar period. On September 10th, an online meeting of Polish Wikipedians in Residence took place. The purpose of these meetings is to exchange knowledge, share experiences, and establish common standards for GLAM-Wiki collaboration.
The latest meeting was initiated by Wojtek Szczęsny, who presented simple ways to streamline work within residencies. He also showcased a custom tool he developed that speeds up editing in Wikipedia, Wikidata, and other Wikimedia projects.
We discussed important GLAM-related presentations from the recent Wikimania in Katowice and focused on tools for measuring the impact of collaborations, such as the Commons Impact Metrics proposed by the Wikimedia Foundation, which we will be testing soon.
During the two-hour meeting, we also reviewed plans for the development of the Wikipedian in Residence program and discussed the ongoing work on the GLAM-Wiki guide, aimed at helping GLAM institutions better understand how to collaborate effectively with volunteers and Wikimedia Polska. We also touched upon the topic of the next meeting, which is planned as an in-person gathering in November this year.
Wiki Takes Rural Archaeology
Exploring archaeological heritage
This past summer, a diverse group of enthusiasts embarked on an exciting adventure to explore and document archaeological heritage through Wiki Takes in Burgos and Segovia. This time, the focus of the activity was archaeological and rural heritage, and all the material obtained will be available on Wikimedia Commons.
The first Wiki Takes took place from 12 to 14 July in the town of Guzmán in Burgos, in collaboration with the Rey Juan Carlos University, the Junta Vecinal de Guzmán and the Diputación de Burgos. The main focus of the activity was the archaeological site of the town's medieval castle, which in 2024 underwent its fourth excavation campaign.
The second event was held from 23 to 25 August in the Segovian town of Bernardos, where the work of photographic documentation of its rich heritage continued. There, in collaboration with the Eresma Arqueológico project, participants were able to discover and document several sites in the area, such as the Cantos Blancos cromlech, the Santa Inés dolmen, Cerro Tormejón, Peña del Moro and the Roman Villa of Matabuey. OpenStreetMap was also involved, which facilitated the inclusion of the sites on this collaborative map.
The result of these meetings was the following: more than twenty people actively participated and, so far, more than 350 images have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. These images will not only enhance the articles on the documented archaeological sites but will also enrich the information on localities such as Guzmán and Miguel Ibáñez, which now have numerous photographs.
In addition to photo capturing, both Wiki Takes included outreach and training sessions. These sessions were open to anyone interested in learning more about how Wikipedia works, how to edit content and how to upload images. These educational activities not only enriched the knowledge of the participants, but also encouraged greater participation in the Wikimedian community.
Each participant had a unique, enriching and revealing experience, which you can read about in this post on Diff. These archaeological heritage Wiki Takes in Burgos and Segovia not only served to document and preserve archaeological heritage, but also to strengthen the Wikimedian community and promote open knowledge. These activities will undoubtedly continue to be a key part of Wikimedia's mission to make knowledge accessible.
Swiss GLAM Programme
GLAM Hack
This year at thas been the 10th edition of the GLAM Hack in Switzerland that is organised by the Opendata Association. The theme was “On the move" with the focus of objects and people moving around the world. It started with the GLAM night featuring a project in Pueblas, Mexico, where art students created art pieces related to objects in Swiss museum collections. Besides there were many interesting projects as the Cyanometer or the map of selforganized art initiatives in Switzerland.
Responsible Tech
The round table on sustainability in the tech field took place on 18th of September at the University Mail in Geneva. The talk was about tools and the future in tech. How can tech become more sustainable? What tools can we use to support the future? The title “Le numérique comme outil : entre consommation et utilisation" shows the shift that was taken to open software and the wiki world.
IT WikiCon
The Italian WikiCon takes place every year as the French and the German WikiCon. Being a country with four official languages there is always a long discussion at the beginning of the year who from the staff can go to what event. In Switzerland the aim is to mix the different languages as otherwise people do not know of each other. So the French staff members usually go to the German and Germans to the Italian Wikicon. This time there was nearly no rain but lots of mosquitos. In Padova there was a lot of art to see in the GLAM institutions but also in the churches. Yoko Ono's installation EX IT is quite impressive filling the space with olive trees.

I have spent most of this month on the update of the Interfaith Explorers site. This involved creating 128 pages of new content to the For Students section of the site, adding content to dozens of existing pages, and fixing broken links all across the site. We are adapting text from Simple English Wikipedia and English Wikipedia, as well as photographs from Wikimedia Commons, to create a mini-site suitable for learners in primary and secondary education, enabling self-directed learning about the Abrahamic religions and the links between them. In the longer term, we would like to expand this to other religious traditions to make a truly global resource. The improvements to the resource are currently being reviewed and are not yet on public view.
The Khalili Foundation/ UNESCO partnership focused on the Memory of the World database has officially begun. This project will improve the representation of MotW inscriptions in the Wikimedia projects, in parallel with UNESCO's database which is being re-developed. It is being fully funded by the Khalili Foundation. UNESCO is recruiting a staff member to join the Memory of the World team to work on this. At this initial stage, I am auditing what already exists on the Wikimedia projects and assessing a benchmark of content and interest.
There are no new image uploads this month, and no new article translations.

Returning to on-wiki work relating to the Khalili Collections, things I'd like to do in the coming months include: finishing and publishing the article on the Samurai Shokai company, improving the "Heaven on Earth: Art from Islamic Lands" article to Good Article status, starting a new article on Islamic metalwork (some work has already been done on a draft), and uploading some new images.

Wikiconference North America
Wikiconference North America was held at Indianapolis, Indiana, from 3-6 October 2024. There was a Culture Crawl.
Many GLAM sessions were held: WikiPortraits, Future of the Wikipedian in Residence, WikiCite, Catalog-a-thon GLAM tools, Wikimedia Working Groups for GLAMs, and Metrics & Tools for GLAMs.

Wikimedian in Residence position
All five candidates have been interviewed for the BHL Wikimedian-in-Residence position and four proposals have been received. These are currently being evaluated with a decision hopefully being made in the near future.
BHL-Wiki working group hypothesis statements for the WMF annual plan
Work continues on the BHL-Wiki working group relevant hypothesis statements for the Wikimedia Foundation Annual Plan. Further discussion continues on both the hypothesis statements themselves as well as how to measure the work undertaken to achieve the aims of the hypotheses statements.
WikiCon North America
Several members of the BHL-Wiki working group will be presenting at the WikiCon North American conference. Of particular relevance to the BHL-Wiki working group is Giovanna Fontenelle’s presentation on How to create Wikimedia Working Groups for GLAMS and Jake Orlowitz's presentation on What Is the Future of the Wikipedian in Residence Position?. Members of the BHL-Wiki working group as well as others interested in these topics are invited to attend this presentation. The conference schedule can be found here.
September outreach
Siobhan Leachman (User:Ambrosia10), Chairperson of the BHL-Wiki working group, reported back on her Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand funded attendance of the joint SPNHC TDWG 2024 conference. Her conference report can be found here.
Global GLAM calls from November: short survey, and register!
Global GLAM-Wiki calls starting in November!
From November 2024, a group of volunteers, affiliates and the WMF Culture and Heritage team will host monthly online video calls for the worldwide GLAM-Wiki community. These calls help us to get to know each other, and learn from each other.
To make the calls as useful for you as possible, we would like to hear what you need. Please let us know in this very short survey.
The calls will be held every month at alternating times to accommodate different time zones around the world.
