NOVEMBRO
ByThe Wiki Loves Monuments Brazil 2024 contest occurred between September 1st and 30th in Brazil and it counted more than 28 thousand images from 282 photographers. Those photographs represent monuments of xxxxxxxxxxxxx cities of 24 of the 26 states and the Federal District.
Wiki Loves Mato Grosso
This year, in commemorations of the Wiki Loves Mato Grosso initiative, we had a prize category exclusive for the best photograph of that state! In addition to that, we promoted events to engage participants in Mato Grosso, such as the Wiki Takes Cáceres. The winner was a photograph of the Francisco Bolonha Municipal Meat Market, taken by the photographer Paul R. Burley during the contest in September of this year.
Best images and Best contributors
The other categories of prizes were Best Contributors and Best Images. In the first one, we gave prizes to the 10 photographers that have more illustrated monuments previously without free-licensed images; Together, they illustrated for the first time almost xxxxxx monuments, of the total of xxxxxxxx. The later category is the main one, in which the jury selects 10 images to represent the country in the international phase of the contest. The ten images represent the states of xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx and are displayed next:
In total, we had expressive numbers of photographs (more than 28 thousand), a recovery in the number of participants (12% more than the last year), with a general retention rate of approximately 24% and 9% for newcommers.

New partnership with Museu da Imagem e do Som do Rio de Janeiro
We have signed one new GLAM partner in Rio de Janeiro State:
It is with great joy that we announce that the "Museu da Imagem e do Som do Rio de Janeiro" (Museum of Image and Sound of Rio de Janeiro, MIS-RJ) has become a GLAM partner of Wiki Movimento Brasil.
MIS-RJ was inaugurated on September 3, 1965, as part of the celebrations for the IV Centenary of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The institution pioneered a new genre of audiovisual museum, which soon inspired similar institutions across other Brazilian cities. In addition to establishing itself as a center for music and image documentation, MIS-RJ became an avant-garde cultural hub during the 1960s and 1970s, serving as a meeting point for new ideas, behaviors, and movements.
Through this partnership, the museum will share part of its collection under a free license. Together, we will promote edit-a-thons, photowalks, and other activities aimed at expanding knowledge about this collection on Wikimedia platforms.

Wiki Takes two cities in Bahia
In 2021, WMB carried out the first Wiki Loves State annual campaign: Wiki Loves Bahia. Its main goal was to reduce information gaps about the state of Bahia in Wikimedia projects. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, we couldn't organize a Wiki Takes a City event. So we are very happy to announce the organization of the Wiki Takes Cachoeira and São Félix event (sister-cities separated / linked by a bridge across the Paraguaçu River) and the partnerships signed for it.
Secretaria de Cultura e Turismo de Cachoeira
Arquivo Público Municipal de São Félix Dr. Júlio Ramos de Almeida (Public Municipal Archives of São Félix) and Arquivo Público Municipal de Cachoeira (Public Municipal Archives of Cachoeira) are located 70 mi from the state capital, Salvador. Their mission is to safekeep historical documents from cities' public administrations: executive, legislative and judicial branches. They also gather and keep photographic and digital collections.
See the Arquivo Público de Cachoeira's GLAM page.

Correio da Manhã ("Morning Post") was a daily newspaper of the Brazilian metropolis Rio de Janeiro, published from 1901 to 1974. After the 1964 Brazilian coup d'état the opposition continued and led to the temporary arrest of owner Niomar Moniz Sodré (1916-2003), daughter in-law of co-founder Edmundo Bittencourt, whose husband Paulo Bittencourt deceased in 1963. Under pressure of the government, advertisers ceased to support the paper, which eventually led to its demise in 1974. >> Part of the collections of Brazilian National Archives. |
Independence or Death by Pedro Américo, oil on canvas, 1888. Displayed in the Museu Paulista.
Américo finished the painting in 1888 in Florence, Italy, 66 years after the proclamation of independence. The Brazilian imperial house commissioned the work, due to investments into the construction of the Museu do Ipiranga (presently the Museu Paulista). The goal of the artwork was to emphasize the monarchy. >> Part of the collections of Museu Paulista. |
