From earlier iland, from මධ්‍යකාලීන ඉංග්‍රීසි iland, yland, ylond, from Old English īeġland, from ප්‍රොටෝ-බටහිර ජර්මානු *auwjuland, from Proto-Germanic *awjōlandą (from Proto-Germanic *awjō (island, waterland, meadow), from ප්‍රොටෝ-ඉන්දු-යුරෝපීය *h₂ekʷeh₂) + *landą (land), equivalent to ey +‎ land.

Cognate with Scots island, iland, yland (island), West Frisian eilân (island), Saterland Frisian Ailound (island), ඕලන්ද eiland (island), Low German Eiland (island), ජර්මානු Eiland (island), ස්වීඩන් ö (island), Öland (Sweden's second largest island), ඩෙන්මාර්ක ø (island), නෝර්වීජියානු øy (island), øyland (large island), අයිස්ලන්ත eyland (island).

The insertion of ⟨s⟩—a 16th century spelling modification—is due to a change in spelling to the unrelated term isle, which previously lacked s (cf. මධ්‍යකාලීන ඉංග්‍රීසි ile, yle). The re-addition was mistakingly carried over to include iland as well. Related also to ජර්මානු Aue (water-meadow), ලතින් aqua (water). More at ea.
