India vs Bangladesh Highlights, 1st Test Day 2: IND 81/3, leads BAN by 308 runs; Gill, Pant at crease

Hasan Mahmud returns to bowl the last over the day. Pant pulls to square but the fielder was there. Just a single. A dot to end the over and the day’s play.

Pant sweeps it towards square for a FOUR. And another big one! He follows it up with a SIX!

OUT! After hitting a four, Kohli is trapped in front by Mehidy as the umpire raises his finger to send the Indian batter back to the pavilion. He goes for 17. Rishabh Pant comes in to bat.

As the trend is going at the fag end of the day’s play, just the one run.

Mehidy concedes a couple of singles in this over. Floodlights coming on gradually at the Chepauk stadium as another 20 minutes or so left in the day’s play.

Scoring rate has come to a snail’s speed as the Indian batters are making a single run in an over. Same goes for this over as Shakib just concedes the one run.

Just the single in the over as Mehidy has a good over with the ball.

Half an hour to go for Stumps on Day 2. Shakib continues. Just a couple of runs.

Gill sweeps Mehidy behind square leg for a FOUR. And just that from the over as Gill defends his way through it.

Shakib returns for his second over. Just the two runs off the over.

Mehidy Hasan brought in. A single taken by Kohli and then a few dots from Gill. But then he takes a run to give Kohli the strike. A single to end the over as Kohli retains the strike.

Nahid bowling. Just a single off the over as Kohli turns down a single on the last ball.

Shakib is brought in, quite earlier as compared to the first innings. Just three runs from the over as the players break for drinks.

Nahid back. Gill goes on his backfoot and punches through extra-cover to hit a FOUR. Another FOUR as he pulls a short arm jab through the cow corner.

Hasan back. Kohli flicks it through mid-wicket for a FOUR.

Nahid Rana is brought into the attack. Jaiswal tries to flick the ball off his pads but it flicks of his legs and for four-byes. But then, he is OUT! Jaiswal catches an edge as he is caught behind by Litton Das.

Gill pushes the ball towards midwicket and runs a double. Good looking shot, very much in control. He then punches the ball towards cover and gets a boundary.

OUT! Rohit is gone cheaply once again. Taskin induces an outside edge and the ball goes straight into the hands of third slip. Early wicket for Bangladesh. 

Shubman Gill walks in at three. He’s off the mark with a single. 

Hasan Mahmud. Rohit Sharma is off the mark with a boundary as well. Just tucks the ball towards square leg for four. Jaiswal is lured in to hit a drive but gets beaten twice in two consecutive deliveries. 

And Jaiswal gets going with a four off the second ball of the innings. Cuts past point. Then he pushes the ball towards mid on and runs a double. Another boundary. Drives the ball on the up and sends it towards cover boundary. 

Even though India took a lead of 227 runs, it did not enforce the follow-on. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal are walking in. India looking to bat Bangladesh out of the game. 

Siraj comes back into the attack and removes Nahid off the first ball. Clean bowled. India takes a 227-run lead. 

Bumrah is back after a one over gap. Nahid Rana slogs and somehow gets the ball to the boundary. Another! Full toss and Nahid cuts past the cordon for four. Better shot. And then Nahid takes almost a suicidal single. 

Ashwin continues from the other end. His lines have been consistent but still hasn’t troubled enough to pick a wicket. Mehidy Hasan slog sweeps him for a SIX! Brilliant shot. 

Jadeja replaces Bumrah. How far can Mehidy Hasan take Bangladesh from here? It still requires 42 runs to avoid follow-on. 

Bumrah’s short ball to Taskin continues. India now has short leg in place as well. OUT! Yorker. It was coming, everyone knew and Bumrah lands it perfectly. Taskin is gone. Fourth wicket for Bumrah. 

Off cutter by Bumrah and Taskin goes for a slog. A thick outside edge flies over the slips cordon for a four. Short ball attack by Bumrah here. 

Ashwin is back. Taskin smacks the ball to mid off. Siraj makes a full stretch dive to his left and almost grabs the ball but couldn’t hold on to it. Terrific effort. Saves a boundary as well. 

Bumrah bowls bouncer to Taskin and he’s hit on the helmet. Physio is out to check him for concussion. After a brief delay, all good. Mehidy drives Bumrah past cover for four! Beautiful hit. 

Siraj. A bit of sloppy fielding from India. Batters try to run a double towards extra cover. The fielder chases and his throw his way off the non-strikers’ end. The back up fielder, Ashwin, too doesn’t grab the ball in single take. The batters run a triple. 

Bumrah back for second spell. OUT! He removed Hasan Mahmud as he is caught by Virat Kohli at the slips. With this, Bumrah picks up 400 international wickets.

Siraj back. Great dive by Rohit Sharma at mid-off and almost pulled off a run out.

Jadeja continues from the other end. Jaiswal finds it hard to catch at the second slip as Hasan’s thick edge races behind for a FOUR.

Siraj back for his second spell. Close! Hasan catches a thick edge but falls short for the slips as it races for a FOUR.

Hundred comes up for Bangladesh as Hasan goes down the ground for a FOUR!

Four runs from Ashwin’s over. Siraj does well to dive and stop the ball from getting to the boundary.

OUT! Shakib tries to sweep but his shot gets deflected off his shoe and Pant takes a comfortable catch. The allrounder goes for 32. Jadeja picks up a quick second scalp.

OUT! Skipper Liton Das tries to sweep but catches the top edge. Dhruv Jurel, the substitute fielder in the deep, takes the catch. Jadeja picks up his first scalp of the match. Mehidy is the new batter at the crease.

There was a run out shout on the first ball, but nothing doing after a third umpire referral. 50-run partnership comes up for the batters at the crease. Just three runs from the over.

Jadeja with his third. Shakib sweeps and another FOUR. He tries to sweep again but misses.

FOUR! A much-needed boundary, one that is coming after 30 balls. Shakib plays it through the covers. And those are the only runs from this over.

Jadeja back. That was really close! The last ball falls into Rishabh Pant’s gloves after almost clipping the bails. Another maiden over.

Siraj looks to be hurt at the ropes as Jadeja is brought it into the attack. Siraj is receiving treatment at the boundary. And he is leaving the field, Sarfaraz comes in. Just three runs from the over.

Shakib with another lovely cover drive for four off Akash. Ashwin gave a terrific chase to it, but his foot was touching the rope when tried to keep the ball inside. Six runs in that over. 

After a flurry of boundaries to begin their partnerships, Shakib and Litton have now switched to defence mode. Ashwin and Akash are bowling tight lines, not allowing any room to the batters. 

Change in bowling, Ashwin is back. Not a lot of spin at the moment, Ashwin is varying his pace a bit while keeping the attack to the stumps. 

Akash Deep is back, and he’s welcomed with a beautiful cover drive for four by Litton. Lovely. Akash induces an edge on the next ball but falls short of the second slip. Litton looks very comfortable at the moment. 

Another square drive by Litton Das, this time off Siraj. Outstanding batting this. Siraj replies with a quick angling in delivery into the pads to beat Das. 

Litton Das is off the mark with a four off Bumrah. Drives the ball towards square off his second delivery. And now Shakib too joins the party! Brilliant square drive for four. Good over for Bangladesh. 

Shakib begins Siraj’s over with a boundary past point. Opens the face of the bat very late. Siraj keeps the attack to the stumps through the over, not allowing Shakib to open his arms

Five down!! Now Bumrah strikes again. Mushfiqur Rahim is caught at slips. Length ball, nipped in a bit and nothing Rahim could’ve done there. 

OUT! Shanto departs, wicket for Siraj. Once again, ball came angling in and then held its line inducing an edge off Shanto’s bat straight to third slip. Bangladesh is four down. 

Shakib Al Hasan is welcomed with almost a similar delivery but is beaten. He’s off the mark with a double, driving wide of cover. 

Bumrah from the other end. Shanto hits an off drive for four off the first ball. Good shot, well in control. Mushfiqur now gets a thick outside but it lands in the gap between slips and gully it goes for four. 

Siraj begins the attack in the second session. Straight-up challenging the outside edge, luring Shanto to drive the ball. Just a single in that over. 

OUT! Akash Deep strikes as he clean bowls Zakir Hasan (3, 22b) and knocks the middle stump down. And another WICKET! Akash Deep clean bowls Mominul, who walks back to the pavilion. Mushfiqur doesn’t give the Indian pacer the satisfaction of a hattrick as he defends his first ball. FOUR! Mushfiqur hits it between gully and slips for a boundary. A bit of respite for Bangladesh as Lunch commences.

Change from the other end as well. R Ashwin is into the attack. Shanto welcomes him with a sweep that goes for four. Ashwin corrects his length in the rest of the over, forcing him to defend. 

Change in bowling, Akash Deep into the attack. Starts off with two deliveries that are way outside off. Good carry to the keeper though. 

Siraj back. Great ball there, creeping in between Shanto’s bat and body. No ball from Siraj, first from the Indian bowlers.

Bumrah back with his bowling that is moving in all sorts of direction. Four runs off the over.

Siraj back with his bowling, asking questions of the Bangladeshi batters. As caught on the stump mic, Rohit Sharma says, “ Height nahi hai, nikal jayega left mai (There’s no height, it’ll go past the left side),” as Siraj seemed to have caught Zakir’s LBW. No DRS taken.

Jasprit Bumrah to open India’s bowling. At the crease are Shadman and Zakir. OUT! Bumrah’s ball nips back in and clips the bails as Shadman Islam goes for just 2. Early break for India.

Hasan Mahmud became the first bowler from Bangladesh to take a five-wicket haul in India in Test matches during the first Test at M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday.

Mahmud finished with the figures of 5/83 as India got bowled out for 376.

Chaotic first ball there! Shout for a lbw as Bumrah barely survives a yorker, Shanto takes the DRS. Before that, an overthrow helped the Indians take a two. Not out! It’s bat first for that decision as Bumrah stays on. OUT! Hasan scalps Bumrah (7, 9b) to complete his five-for! India has been bowled out for 376.

OUT! Ashwin departs. His first aggressive shot of the day but doesn’t time it well. Tried to go over mid off but not enough power. He falls for a well-made 113 off 133 balls. Gets a standing ovation as he walks off. Third wicket of the day for Taskin. 

Change in bowling, Nahid Rana into the attack. Beats Bumrah on the frontfoot. Two runs came in that over. 

OUT! Akash Deep is gone. Goes for a slog off Taskin, gets a top edge straight to the fielder at mid off. He falls for 17 off 30 balls.

Hasan, on the other hand, is looking a bit tired. He bowled long spells yesterday and today, again, started with sun shining. Akash Deep meanwhile is enjoying his time at the crease. Swings his bat and gets a thick edge over slip cordon for four. 

Taskin has bowled a good spell so far. Has got the ball to swing and asked questions to the batters. Quite a few plays and misses. 

SHOT! Akash Deep play a spectacular straight drive for four off Hasan. Hold the pose. 

Akash Deep goes for a pull but ends up skying it. The midwicket fielder inside the circle runs back but drops it! Shakib Al Hasan was the fielder there.

Akash Deep is off the mark with a brilliantly timed flick towards square leg for four. And now he targets the cover region and gets another boundary! Full ball by Hasan and Akash drives, slightly in the air, into the wide gap between cover and backward point. 

OUT! Taskin Ahmed strikes in his second over of the day. Ball shaping into the left hander, Jadeja gets a faint edge straight to the slip. 199-run partnership is broken. Terrific innings by Jadeja who misses his century by 14 runs. 

Akash Deep is the new batter in. He can play a few hits as well as we have seen in domestic cricket. 

Hasan Mahmud from the other end. He is moving the ball away from the right hander. Nothing to trouble Ashwin though so far. First runs today for India come with a four. Ashwin gets a thick edge that goes over the slip cordon. 

Bangladesh begins the day by taking the second new ball. Taskin Ahmed swings it into the Jadeja, who gets an inside edge before the ball hits the pad. Hint of swing into the left hander but Jadeja is patiently leaving anything that is going outside off stump.

Expect a hot day today. The sun is already out and shining above the M.A Chidambaram Stadium. Chennai rain though has its way of surprising. 

Playing in just his fourth Test, the 24-year-old pacer dismissed Rohit Sharma (6 off 19 balls), Shubman Gill (0 off 8 balls), Virat Kohli (6 off 6 balls) and Rishabh Pant (39 off 52 balls) during the first day’s play after Bangladesh opted to bowl first under overcast conditions.
