While it might not be your preferred daytime viewing, we’re sure some of our customers and friendly education peers will have taken a moment to see whether education featured heavily in today’s King’s Speech. We at Lexonik - literacy at the speed of sound HQ were particularly keen to see if any component in it might contribute to our essential mission: ‘Nobody should be limited because they can’t read’. To that end, we note some helpful projections and intentions: -         A bill to raise standards in education and promote children’s wellbeing. Well, amen to that. We look forward to seeing how this is delivered and what impact it can have at what pace. Being focused on aiding children to improve their reading age, their vocabulary comprehension and their overall educational journey, we know they are best placed to achieve well and to gain the most from their learning activities where they are nourished, nurtured, and served by an appropriate number of teaching staff who themselves are cared for in their profession. -         Skills England Bill Legislation apparently incoming on establishing Skills England in order to ensure businesses, providers, authorities, and government work together to ensure positive outcomes of opportunity beyond education. As a training provider, we sit poised and ready to embrace this. We heard The King reference a ‘partnership with employers at its heart’. That, as an organisation who loves partnership, collaboration and the vision of a common goal, sounds like the right direction to us – and we’d very much like a seat at the table. We consider ourselves a hugely valuable partner to our school clients, and also, to any businesses and FE colleges who want to work with us to aid the way in which young people are able to step forward in both their professional and wider life journey. I've been shooting panoramic images for some years now. Different cameras, different mounts, video and stills. We used to feature these on the BBC local websites and they were very popular even at small size and low megapixel quality. Its quite something 2024 being able to get this higher resolution result for not too much effort. Mostly auto. Flying skills more of a focus than photographic know how. An auto stitch and a clever multishot array really does produce some excellent results. You do have to be mindful of safety and not risk anyone doing these but i gotta say im pretty happy with what i get sometimes. This one came out great! Try it on a bigger screen rather than just a phone. the quality holds up because in effect its a number of shots joined together. A predefined template and some clever software auto creates the equilinear projection master shot. Google/Facebook read EXIF data in the photo give a rotating view if wanted. A little post shot retouching on a mobile phone is all it needed. I am the little spec in the distance. 9 out of 10 Yeti users set their mic incorrectly and I’ve had to fix my fair share. Yetis can be great mics, albeit with judicious mic placement and gainsgaging, but. And it’s a big but, you need a proper room to record i ln. Doesn’t matter the mic, if the room sounds bad, has extraneous noise or issues, the audio will never come out as good as it can. Dynamic mics can help when rooms aren’t the best (Yeti’s are condenser so there in lies their strength and weakness) but, make the room as good as it can be and you’ll get better results.

What’s in my Kit Bag…? Sony PXW-FX9 - Part 2 In part 1, I mentioned how ergonomics is a big part of the appeal for me with the FX9. However, while on the topic of the shoulder mount and pistol grip, there are two important things to note: First, although the camera can be shoulder-mounted straight out of the box, I’ve added a 'Zacuto VCT Pro Baseplate.' It’s not cheap, but it provides extra support, is more comfortable, allows me to use a VCT tripod plate, and looks cool. Not essential, but nice to have. Second, the mounting arm for the pistol grip is functional but requires manual screwing in and out every time you want to adjust the position, which is quite a hassle. Again, Zacuto offers an alternative that replaces this screw function with a simple button press. I don't currently have one, but it's definitely on my shopping list! Now onto the viewfinder, and what a treat. It's not that the viewfinder is exceptional, but the fact that this camera even has one - with an eyepiece, no less - is noteworthy. The current trend with 'mid-size' cameras has made eyepieces more of a luxury than a standard feature. Most smaller cameras have rear viewfinders, but anyone who’s used one knows they're pretty useless. They’re okay in a pinch, but that's about it. A flip-out LCD is great, until you’re standing outside in daylight. Then you end up squinting like Clint Eastwood just to see what you’re filming. In short, having an eyepiece is fantastic! Next up is audio. The FX9 features four audio channels, which I really appreciate. This setup gives me two channels to play with while the other two serve as constant backups via the internal mic. In the fast-paced world of newsgathering, it's easy to forget to switch your audio inputs back after recording an interview. Knowing that the camera always has those backup channels is reassuring. What I really like about the audio setup is actually an add-on - the 'multi-interface shoe.' It's a simple feature, but I really appreciate it. This adapter allows you to connect the radio mic receiver directly to the camera without needing cables. This used to be the norm with larger ENG cameras, and I've missed it. Not having to deal with audio 'clicks' from dodgy XLR cables is great. While it does occupy the shoe space that might be used for a top light, this can easily be solved with a magic arm. If you've used a recent Sony broadcast camera, you'll be familiar with their variable ND system. Instead of the fixed Neutral Density choices of the past, this new system lets you dial in the exact amount of ND needed, which is incredibly handy. It functions almost like a second iris, but since your F-stop doesn't change, you can maintain your depth of field. There's also an auto function that works well, though I rarely use it. Once again I’ve reached the character limit. In the next post I’ll look at the dual ISO and the two most controversial words in camera work ‘Auto Focus’! What do you think of the FX9? Cheers!

UK based, Spiritland Productions added System T Dynamic Automation System (DAS) software to their S500 console. We caught up with mix engineer and co-founder, Antony Shaw to hear his thoughts on the automation system: “For Saturday Night Live, we tracked 256 audio channels in the end, 6 MADI and 64 channels of Dante radio mics, so quite a sizeable gig… I ran the DAS automation in Mix End on all elements, to time of day timecode instead of show code per track. We did the whole gig as a single pass. We did a quick rollback at the end and then stored the mix, after this we did a safety "Save as". We then went back to the original and did a ‘save as’ for each track that we mixed, allowing us to then use Mix Fill for changes to a whole track without worrying about start and end times...
