The ABA League family is saddened to hear of passing of one of the basketball greats and one of the greatest legends of Crvena zvezda Meridianbet - Dragan Kapičić.
Kapičić has passed away at the age of 75.
Dragan Kapičić's basketball journey has been always closely connected with Crvena zvezda Meridianbet and Yugoslav national team.
Kapičić started his pro career in Crvena zvezda Meridianbet back in 1965 and has stayed among the red-and-whites all the way until 1977. During those 12 years, he helped the club win its first ever European trophy as he was part of the famous red-and-white team who won the FIBA Saporta Cup in 1974. He also won two national championships and three national cups with Crvena zvezda Meridianbet.
After leaving Crvena zvezda Meridianbet, Kapičić played four more years for Saturn Köln, while in his last pro year he won the German championship in 1981.
Dragan Kapičić was also a regular member of the Yugoslav national team with whom he won two gold medals at the 1970 FIBA World Cup and at the 1975 FIBA EuroBasket, while he also won three silver medals with the national team at the 1969 FIBA EuroBasket, 1971 FIBA EuroBasket and at the 1974 FIBA World Cup.
After he finished his player’s career, he worked as a director in Crvena zvezda Meridianbet during the 80s and 90s, while in 2007 he was named the first ever President of the Serbian Basketball Federation.
