Pagan Polyamory: Becoming a Tribe of Hearts Paperback – 30 Nov. 2005

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 27 ratings

The term "polyamory" describes non-monogamous relationships based on honesty and affection. Presenting a fascinating peek inside the polyamorous lifestyle from a Pagan perspective, Raven Kaldera offers practical insight and spiritual depth into a vastly misunderstood way of life. Relating polyamory to astrology and the elements (air, fire, water, earth, and spirit), the author addresses all aspects of the polyamorous life, including family life, sexual ethics, emotional issues, proper etiquette, relationship boundaries, and the pros of cons of this lifestyle. Kaldera also discusses polyamory as a path of spiritual transformation and shares spells, rituals, and ceremonies for affirming one's relationships and spirituality.

I feel so much better prepared and inspired for my new polyamorous life, will read it again and use as a guidebook and reference to help anchor myself. Raven presents really thorough and balanced views on many aspects that can often seem elusive and difficult in the realms of emotion and sexuality. Will be recommending to anyone who shows any inclinations in the direction of polyamory and possibly even to monogomists who are seeking a relationship handbook... love xx

The only thing wrong with this book is the fact that it aspires to a greater level of scholarship than it achieves, but the anecdotes covering the major aspects of polyamorous practice in the middle of a (dysfunctionally) monogamous society are enlightening, to say the least. At times you get a sense that this is a serious research effort, but the sample size is clearly too small, with the more eloquent people being quoted multiple times.

However, its flaws are eminently forgivable. The anecdotes are wonderful and provide an overview of a topic that is all too easy to stereotype. These are all people who are in love and are committed to learning how to work out the compromises of love without compromising the fact of the love itself. Additionally, Raven Kaldera's rituals for the many aspects of polyamorous life help tie it very firmly to the spiritual world that his subjects' love is expressing.

I was reduced to tears more than once reading this. It was worth every cent.

While I really love the prequel some of the advice in the book is really toxic when it comes to handling relationships. Would recommend for the take on paganism but not the polyamory content.

This book was exactly what I expected and more. The book is full of real life experiences of different scenarios that are invaluable to read. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in polyamory. Of course being Pagan or open-minded to religion doesn't hurt either.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid overview of practicing/being polyamorous from a pagan perspective

I think he could have gone into more depth about the spiritual/neopagan aspects of polyamory - mostly what he seemed interested in discussing were rituals for poly handfastings, settling arguments, etc. and how it interacts with neopagan culture. Overall a really interesting book with some fresh perspectives that I enjoyed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pagan Polys Need This Book
Reviewed in the United States on 12 July 2011
Kaldera took the time to interview people in poly relationships (or have them fill out surveys) to pull together information from a wide cross-section of the poly community. He does a wonderful job of presenting concepts and differing viewpoints on the same ideas. He's not very good about sourcing statistical-sounding information, but overall the book will be valuable to anyone considering or involved in a poly relationship.

Recommend this book for pagans and non-partisan alike. If you already practice polymorphism or are just getting started in the poly life style.
