Oct. 9: Michigan elections FAQ: Where Mike Rogers lives and is registered to vote

Bridge Michigan recently launched an Ask Bridge Anything feature in our Voter Guide, inviting readers to ask questions that we promptly answer.

Our latest reader question:

“According to Rachel Maddow, Mike (Rogers) lives in and is registered to vote in Coral Gables, Florida. Is this information correct? Or is this another example of a politician running for Office and doesn’t even live in our State?!?”

Mike Rogers, a Livingston County native who represented the region in Congress from 2001 through 2014, moved to Florida after his retirement from the U.S. House and was up until recently registered to vote at a home he owns in Cape Coral.

He returned to Michigan last year and is currently running for the state’s open U.S. Senate seat.

In July 2023, The Detroit News reported Rogers was in the process of closing on a Michigan property. In January, the Michigan Advance reported that he and his wife had purchased a home in Oakland County’s White Lake Township but were not yet residing there.

That property is currently undergoing a rebuild, but Rogers is registered to vote in Genoa Township, near Brighton, at a home reportedly owned by his sister-in-law.

Rogers campaign spokesperson Chris Gustafson said Wednesday that Rogers is living at the Genoa Township home but will be moving to the White Lake property this summer when construction is complete.

As of mid-April, Rogers reportedly was still registered to vote in Florida, but his campaign said at the time he was in the process of canceling the registration.

Current records show that happened.

He is now officially only registered to vote in Michigan.

Rogers is one of four Republicans competing for the chance to try and replace retiring Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow.

Other GOP primary candidates include former Congressman Justin Amash, businessman Sandy Pensler and physician Sherry O'Donnell.

U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin, actor Hill Harper and businessman Nasser Beydoun are competing in the Democratic primary.
