MLB Ejection 186 - Marvin Hudson (2; AJ Hinch)

HP Umpire Marvin Hudson ejected Tigers manager AJ Hinch (Replay Review decision that upheld 2B Umpire Nick Mahrley's catch [out] call; QOCN) in the bottom of the 9th inning of the #WhiteSox-#Tigers game. With none out and none on, Tigers batter Zach McKinstry hit a 2-2 fastball from White Sox pitcher Enyel De Los Santos on a fly ball to right fielder Dominic Fletcher, who attempted to catch the baseball near the outfield wall, ruled a catch (out) by 2B Umpire Mahrley. Upon Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Tigers manager Hinch, the out call stood. Replays indicate the fly ball appeared to touch the outfield wall before being caught by Fletcher, the call was incorrect. At the time of the ejection, the White Sox were leading, 9-5. The White Sox ultimately won the contest, 9-5.

With one out and one on, Baez took a 3-2 sinker from Astros pitcher Framber Valdez for a called third strike. Replays indicate the pitch was located over the inner edge of home plate and thigh-high (px -0.66, pz 2.35), but that the pitch timer might have expired prior to Valdez initiating his motion to deliver the pitch (the penalty for which is an automatic ball). At the time of the ejection, the Astros were leading, 1-0. The Tigers ultimately won the contest, 4-1.

With one out and one on (R1), White Sox batter Yasmani Grandal hit a 0-2 fastball from Tigers pitcher Joe Jimenez for a fly ball to center fielder Riley Greene, who threw to second base as White Sox baserunner R1 Jose Abreu tagged and attempted to advance, originally ruled safe by Layne, and upheld via Replay Review after a manager's challenge by Tigers manager Hinch. Replays fail to conclusively indicate whether the fielder's glove made contact with the runner's helmet, uniform, or body while the runner was off the base, the "call stands" ruling was correct. At the time of the ejection, the White Sox were leading, 5-4. The White Sox ultimately won the contest, 6-4.

With one out and none on, Tigers batter Robbie Grossman took a 2-1 sinker from Rangers pitcher Dane Dunning for a called second strike and attempted to check his swing on a 2-2 slider, ruled a ball by HP Umpire Jansen Visconti and called a swinging third strike on appeal by 3B Umpire Jerry Meals. Replays indicate the 2-1 pitch was located over the heart of home plate and at the hollow of the knee (px 0.17, pz 1.22 [sz_bot 1.41 / RAD 1.29 / MOE 1.20]) while the 2-2 pitch was reviewed and adjudicated by the UEFL Appeals Board as a correct call. 2B Umpire Hunter Wendelstedt ejected Tigers manager AJ Hinch (Replay Review decision/catcher's interference call; QOCY) in the top of the 5th and HP Umpire Quinn Wolcott ejected Tigers pitcher Joe Jimenez (balls/strikes) in the top of the 6th inning of the #Angels-#Tigers game. In the 5th, with one out and one on (R1), Angels batter Justin Upton attempted to swing at a first-pitch sinker from Tigers pitcher Matt Manning, ruled a foul ball by HP Umpire Wolcott and overturned to catcher's interference as a result of a Manager's Challenge by Angels manager Joe Maddon. Replays indicate Upton's bat made contact with Tigers catcher Dustin Garneau's mitt as the pitch arrived at home plate, the call was correct. At the time of the ejection, the Tigers were leading, 9-2.

In the 6th, Tigers pitcher Jimenez gave up a single to Angels batter Phil Gosselin, and walked Angels batters Jared Walsh and Upton. Replays indicate of the 11 callable pitches thrown by Jimenez, all 11 were properly officiated (100% accuracy), the call was correct. At the time of Jimenez's ejection, the Tigers were leading, 10-5. The Angels ultimately won the contest, 13-10.

Replays indicate the pitch was located over the heart of home plate and below the hollow of the knee (px 0.2, pz 1.23 [sz_bot 1.34 / RAD 1.217 ... 0.156 inches of overlap), the call was correct.* At the time of the ejections, the Rangers were leading, 1-0. The Rangers ultimately won the contest, 4-0.

2B Umpire Joe West ejected Astros Manager AJ Hinch (batter's interference call by HP Umpire Chris Segal) in the bottom of the 1st inning of the Rangers-Astros game. With none out and one on (R1), Astros batter Alex Bregman attempted to strike a 3-2 changeup from Rangers pitcher Nick Martinez as Astros baserunner R1 George Springer attempted to steal second base. Replays indicate that after striking out swinging at the 3-2 pitch, batter Bregman stepped out of his batter's box and behind home plate into the area in which Rangers catcher Brett Nicholas was making his throw to second base and in doing so committed interference pursuant to Official Baseball Rule 6.01(a)(5), the call was correct.* At the time of the ejection, the Rangers were leading, 1-0. The Astros ultimately won the contest, 5-1.

Replays indicate the pitch was located inside and thrown behind Gattis after White Sox batter Jose Abreu was hit by a pitch the previous half-inning, the call was irrecusable. With one out in the 9th, Astros batter Jason Castro took a 3-2 slider from Mariners pitcher Steve Cischek for a called third strike and ensuing batter George Springer took a 3-2 sinker from Cischek for a called third strike; Gomez did not bat in the 9th inning. Replays indicate the pitches to both batters were located over the inner half of home plate and belt high (Castro: px -.59, pz 2.66; Springer: px -.45, pz 2.88), the call was correct. At the time of Hinch's ejection, the Mariners were leading, 2-1. At the time of Gomez's ejection, the game was tied, 2-2. The Mariners ultimately won the contest, 3-2, in 10 innings.

MLB Ejection 157: Bill Miller (2; AJ Hinch)

HP Umpire Bill Miller ejected Astros Manager AJ Hinch for arguing a Replay Review decision that overturned 3B Umpire Adrian Johnson's out (catch) call in the top of the 5th inning of the Tigers-Astros game. With two out and one on, Tigers batter Ian Kindler hit a 2-1 cutter from Astros pitcher Collin McHugh on a line drive to left field, where left fielder Preston Tucker attempted to catch the ball. Upon Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Tigers Manager Brad Ausmus, Johnson's ruling was overturned and baserunner R2 Anthony Gose was awarded home plate, the call was irrecusable. At the time of the ejection, the Tigers were leading, 1-0. The Tigers ultimately won the contest, 4-2, in 11 innings.

MLB Ejection 101: Mike DiMuro (1; AJ Hinch)

3B Umpire Mike DiMuro ejected Astros Manager AJ Hinch for arguing a Replay Review decision that affirmed DiMuro's out (fan interference) call in the top of the 6th inning of the Astros-Mariners game. With two out and one on, Astros batter Evan Gattis hit a 1-2 cutter from Mariners pitcher Taijuan Walker in the air to foul territory in left field, where shortstop Brad Miller attempted to field the fly ball, ruled an out (fan interference) by DiMuro and confirmed via Replay Review as the result of a Manager's Challenge by Hinch. Replays indicate that as the ball descended toward Miller's glove, a spectator interfered with Miller's opportunity to complete the catch, the call was irrecusable.* At the time of the ejection, the Mariners were leading, 4-2. The Mariners ultimately won the contest, 6-3.
