MLB Ejection 059: Angel Hernandez (1; Ryne Sandberg)

HP Umpire Angel Hernandez ejected Phillies Manager Ryne Sandberg for arguing a ball (check swing) call made by 1B Umpire Scott Barry in the top of the 9th inning of the Rockies-Phillies game. With none out and two on, Rockies batter Nolan Arenado attempted to check his swing on a 2-2 fastball from Phillies pitcher Luis Garcia for a called third ball, affirmed as no swing by Barry. Play was reviewed and reversed by the UEFL Appeals Board (0-8-0), the call was incorrect. At the time of the ejection, the Rockies were leading, 2-0. The Rockies ultimately won the contest, 4-1.

HP Umpire Chris Guccione ejected Phillies pitcher A.J. Burnett and Manger Ryne Sandberg for arguing a ball one call in the bottom of the 2nd inning of the Phillies-Nationals game. With two out and none on, Burnett threw a 0-0 fastball to Nationals batter Jayson Werth for a called first ball. Replays indicate the pitch was located off the outer edge of home plate and thigh high (px 1.311, pz 2.721), the call was correct. At the time of the ejections, the Nationals were leading, 5-0. The Nationals ultimately won the contest, 11-0.

Josh Beckett's no-hitter with plate umpire Brian Knight presiding Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia marked the first no-hitter of the 2014 MLB season. Knight was joined by Crew Chief Fieldin Culbreth (1B), Manny Gonzalez (2B) and Seth Buckminster (3B). This is Beckett's first career no-hitter, a career-high 12-pitch performance.

Saturday's was Knight's second plate no-hitter (Jon Lester, 5/19/2008) and the first MLB no-hitter since July 14, 2013 (Mark Wegner; Tim Lincecum). Knight is the only member of this crew to have called a no-hitter.

MLB Replay Reviews 226, 227: Bellino, Kellogg (5, 1)

Instant Replay Review confirmed HP Umpire Dan Bellino's out (Rule 7.13) call in the bottom of the 6th and overturned 1B Umpire Jeff Kellogg's safe call in the bottom of the 8th inning of the Blue Jays-Phillies game. In the 6th, with none out and one on, Phillies batter Ryan Howard hit a 10- fastball from Blue Jays pitcher Esmil Rogers on a line drive to right fielder Jose Bautista, who threw to catcher Josh Thole as Phillies baserunner R1 arrived at home plate. Upon Replay Review as the result of a request by Phillies Manager Ryne Sandberg and initiation by Crew Chief Kellogg, Bellino's ruling was affirmed, the call was correct. At the time of the review, the Blue Jays were leading, 3-0.

In the 8th, with none out and none on, Phillies batter Marlon Byrd hit a 1-1 slider from Blue Jays pitcher Steve Delabar on the ground to shortstop Jose Reyes, who threw to first baseman Edwin Encarnacion as Byrd arrived at first base. Upon Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Blue Jays Manager John Gibbons, Kellogg's ruling was reversed, the call was incorrect. At the time of the review, the Blue Jays were leading, 3-0. The Blue Jays ultimately won the contest, 3-0.

With none out and one on, Diamondbacks baserunner Martin Prado attempted to advance on a fastball in the dirt from Phillies pitcher Jonathan Papelbon, catcher Carlos Ruiz to second baseman Chase Utley as Prado slid into second base. Upon Instant Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Phillies Manager Ryne Sandberg, Conroy's ruling that Utley did not tag Prado while off his base was reversed, the call was incorrect. At the time of the review, the Phillies were leading, 6-5. The Phillies ultimately won the contest, 6-5.

Pollock who threw to second baseman Aaron Hill as Phillies baserunner R1 Cody Asche slid back into second base. Upon Instant Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Phillies Manager Ryne Sandberg, Davidson's ruling that Hill tagged Asche while off his base was reversed, the call was incorrect. At the time of the review, the Diamondbacks were leading, 4-3. The Diamondbacks ultimately won the contest, 5-4.

In the 5th, with one out and two on, Dodgers batter Yasiel Puig hit a 1-1 cutter from Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick on the ground to third baseman Cody Asche, who threw to catcher Carlos Ruiz as Dodgers baserunner R3 Hanley Ramirez arrived at home plate. Upon Instant Replay Review as the result of a request by Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly and initiation by Crew Chief Hunter Wendelstedt, DiMuro's ruling that Ruiz did not block home plate without the ball and remained in compliance with the terms of the anti-home plate collision Rule 7.13 in tagging out Ramirez was affirmed, the call was correct. At the time of the review, the Phillies were leading, 3-2.

In the 6th, with none out and none on, Dodgers batter Juan Uribe 2-2 cutter from Phillies pitcher Kendrick on the ground to shortstop Freddy Galvis, who threw to first baseman Ryan Howard as Uribe arrived at first base. Upon Instant Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Phillies Manager Ryne Sandberg, Wendelstedt's ruling that Howard did not catch the ball and tag first base prior to Uribe's touch arrival was affirmed, the call was correct. Rosenberg on the ground to shortstop Jimmy Rollins, who threw to catcher Will Nieves, to third baseman Freddy Galvis to second baseman Chase Utley as Dickerson arrived at second base, Rockies baserunner R3 Jordan Pacheco out at home plate. Upon Instant Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Phillies Manager Ryne Sandberg, Tichenor's ruling that Utley did not tag Dickerson while he was off base was reversed, the call was incorrect. At the time of the review, the Rockies were leading, 6-5.
