Hoping Chen began her career in film as a writer. She co-wrote Taiwanese director Edward Yang's un-filmed script "Xiang Qi Le Ni". She later became a documentary filmmaker and produced award winning drama series. From 2008, Hoping switched her focus on storytelling in film editing. Her first feature film credit is Singaporean director Anthony Chen's "Ilo Ilo" which won the Camera d'Or at Cannes Film Festival 2013.
