On April 25, a new series was released that all fans of Neil Gaiman's work have been waiting for an incredibly long time. After all, this is not just a live-action adaptation of one of the famous American author's works, but a story that takes place in the same universe as The Sandman! We are, of course, talking about Dead Boy Detectives, a young adult comedy-drama that skillfully combines elements of occult detective and supernatural horror.

The new series has pleasantly impressed critics and audiences alike, with an astounding 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But despite fan love, rave reviews, and the top spot on Netflix's regional charts, Dead Boy Detectives doesn't seem to be getting the ratings it deserves. Upon his debut as the face of Netflix’s live-action One Piece series, Iñaki Godoy impressed everyone with his portrayal of Monkey D. Luffy, the amiable and upbeat leader of the Straw Hat Pirates and a highly recognizable manga and anime character. Despite his extensive experience as a star in Telemundo’s series La querida del Centauro and Netflix’s The Imperfects, the young actor was still relatively unknown.

Nevertheless, it is inspiring to see a 20-year-old succeed to this extent (he presently has over 2.5 million Instagram followers). The fantasy adventure series, which was based on the well-known Japanese manga series, made the Mexican actor extremely popular among youths.

Godoy could easily play Beast Boy, one of the founding members of the Teen Titans. While many fans could connect the actor’s persona with One Piece‘s Luffy, the charming actor could also convince his audience as a shape-changing teen titan. However, one major problem could prevent this fan-casting from becoming a reality.

New Canadian Black talent faces many obstacles to making real inroads on film and TV sets, some hidden or barely acknowledged.

But music video-turned-film and TV director Julien Christian Lutz – also known as “Hotline Bling” helmer Director X – sees one barrier in plain sight and easily surmounted: offering support and guidance to emerging Black talent so they can know their way around Canadian film and TV sets.

“You walk onto those sets and into those writing rooms, they’re very white places,” Lutz, co-founder and managing partner of indie banner Fela, told The Hollywood Reporter ahead of a Toronto Film Festival panel on Sept. 11, entitled Empowering Rising Voices: Advocating for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Through Film, and presented by indeed.

Arriving on the streamer on August 31st, the show created by Matt Owens and Steven Maeda is a live-action adaptation of the same-name 1997 manga series from Eiichiro Oda. Godoy stars as Monkey D. This creature is a baby chupacabra who’s been separated from its parents and has taken refuge in Alex’s grandfather’s barn. But all is not well – Christian Slater’s government funded scientist has been tracking the chupacabras, believing they have healing qualities that he’d be able to harness.

After a record-setting showing last year, overall representation of LGBTQ characters on television has decreased from 637 characters to 596 characters while racial diversity has increased to more than 50 percent of those characters being people of color.

This is according to the 18th edition of Where We Are on TV, a new report from media watchdog group GLAAD that analyzes the number of LGBTQ regular and recurring characters on scripted primetime broadcast, scripted primetime cable and scripted series on the eight major streaming platforms that aired between June 1, 2022, and May 31, 2023.

GLAAD reports that its research found 141 LGBTQ characters on broadcast, 139 on cable and 356 on the streaming services Apple TV+, Amazon Prime, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, Peacock and Paramount+. Numbers are expected to drop for next year’s report as the organization states that 24 percent of LGBTQ characters are on projects that have been canceled or are in the midst of a final season.

Talent agent Brian Wittenstein is launching a new company, Prototype Talent Agency, which he is starting with many of his existing clients, including Italia Ricci, WWE’s “The American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes and Piper Curda.

The move comes a month and a half after Wittenstein exited Hyperion Talent Agency following misconduct allegations.

Other clients who are following Wittenstein to Prototype include Emery Kelly, Ricky Garcia, Major Curda, Brandi Rhodes, Owen Patrick Joyner, Julia Garcia (Sydney to the Max), and martial artist/viral sensation Rayna Vallandingham.

The agency will also represent professional wrestling talents for their wrestling agreements, including Rhodes as well as WWE Hall of Famer Billy Gunn, among others.

Netflix is parting ways with Warrior Nun.

Deadline reported Tuesday afternoon that the cult favorite has been canceled after two seasons.

The second season of the series launched on November 10, but there was a lack of promotion for the series, likely contributing to the lower-than-expected performance.

Netflix had several opportunities to promote the show, including at its Tudum Global Fan Event, but the streaming service elected to let the show slip under the radar.

As a result, Warrior Nun Season 2 spent just three weeks in the streamer's weekly Top 10 for English-language series, with #5 being the peak.

The series also showed up on the Nielsen Streaming Chart for the week of November 7, with 595 million minutes viewed, coming in ahead of The Handmaid's Tale, Andor, and The Watcher for that week.

Arn’s iHeartPodcast Network has been named Australia’s #1 podcast publisher for the 30th consecutive ranker report, while also achieving record downloads, regaining the top ranked podcast, and holding half of the top 10 shows.

Results from the October ranker show the network delivered a combined total of 5.6 million listeners (up 4) and 26.6 million monthly downloads (up 7.5), the highest number of downloads ever achieved.

Arn’s iHeartPodcast Network also continues to hold half of the Top 10 most listened to podcasts in the country – more than any other publisher – including Casefile. The popular true crime podcast from Audioboom has regained the #1 overall slot with 993,418 listeners and over 2.9 million downloads, making it the most downloaded podcast in the ranker.

Life Uncut with Brittany Hockley and Laura Byrne moved up to #3 overall (#1 Entertainment), increasing its audience by almost 60,000 listeners to 479,601, with nearly 1.66 million downloads.

The series followed Ingrid Yun (Arden Cho), a 1st generation Korean American and the first lawyer in her family, who experiences the trials and tribulations of excelling at the prestigious (but old school) law firm, Parsons Valentine.

Bradley Gibson (Power Book II: Ghost), Alexandra Turshen (Ray Donovan), Dominic Sherwood (Shadowhunters), and Rob Heaps (Good Girls) also starred.

The cast was rounded out by Nolan Gerard Funk (The Flight Attendant), Matthew Rauch (Banshee), and Roby Attal (The Haunting of Bly Manor).

Unfortunately, the series ended on a big cliffhanger, meaning it joins the ranks of Netflix's other one-and-done series that failed to get conclusions.

“Partner Track,” based on Helen Wan’s 2013 novel “The Partner Track,” starred Arden Cho, who played Ingrid Yun, a motivated young lawyer who is climbing the ladder to becoming a partner at a prestigious law firm. “Partner Track” premiered in late August of this year, while “The Imperfects” came in early September. Both made appearances on the Netflix Top 10 and stayed there for three weeks, with the former peaking in the No. 4 position and the latter peaking at No. 3.

Exclusive: Netflix has opted not to proceed with second seasons of legal drama Partner Track, headlined by Arden Cho, and sci-fi drama The Imperfects, starring Italia Ricci.

Neither series has been a breakout. Partner Track debuted August 26 with 16.7M minutes viewed in its opening weekend and peaked at No. 4 on Netflix’s Weekly Top 10 for English-language series. The Imperfects opened at No. 3 in its debut weekend (September 8-11) before slipping. Both series spent only three weeks in the Top 10, which is not the long tail Netflix wants to see for shows that earn renewals.

Netflix brass had high expectations for Partner Track, which broke ground in representation as a romantic drama with an Asian American lead, Cho. Season 1 ended with a big cliffhanger, which indicates confidence in a show’s prospects, and the streamer had commissioned a writers room that was up and running, working on ideas for a potential second season,...

Netflix’s Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story not only topped Nielsen’s latest U.S. ranking of streaming originals, it delivered the chart’s 10th-biggest tally ever in its 110-week history.

A Wednesday release, Dahmer‘s 10-episode run amassed 3.7 billion minutes viewed — a one-week tally only bested by Stranger Things (five times), Tiger King (twice) and Ozark ( twice).

Results from the September Podcast Ranker Report released today also show Arn’s iHeartPodcast Network continues to hold half of the Top 10 most listened to podcasts in the country – more than any other publisher.

The network’s top titles cover a variety of genres and include Casefile from Audioboom; Life Uncut with Brittany Hockley & Laura Byrne; The Kyle & Jackie O Show (#1 Catch Up and #6 overall); Stuff You Should Know; and The Imperfects.

Other standouts for Arn’s iHeartPodcast Network include No Such Thing as a Fish from Audioboom (#17); and She’s On The Money with Victoria Devine.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power fell off some in its third week of release, but the pricey Prime Video show remained among the most watched titles in Nielsen’s rankings. Netflix’s Cobra Kai, meanwhile, spent a second week as the top overall title.

The Rings of Power had 988 million minutes of viewing time in the United States from Sept. 12 to 18, per Nielsen (the show’s fourth episode debuted Sept. 16). That’s a decline of about 18 percent from the previous week’s 1.2 billion minutes. The series amassed 3.44 billion minutes of viewing over its first 18 days, placing it among the top half of Prime Video shows since the advent of Nielsen’s streaming rankings, with four weeks still to be tallied.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power held steady in its second week of release, but it gave up its No. 1 spot in the streaming rankings. The Nielsen SVOD charts for Sept. 5-11 also feature a first: titles from four different platforms topping a billion minutes of viewing time in the United States.

Netflix’s Cobra Kai claimed the top overall spot for the week, which saw the premiere of the show’s fifth season. It drew 1.74 billion minutes of viewing time across its 50 episodes. Another Netflix show, Devil in Ohio, jumped by 92 percent over its debut week to finish second among original series, at 1.38 billion minutes.

For the Week of Sept. 5, Netflix’s Cobra Kai amassed 1.74 billion minutes viewed across 50 total episodes. Netflix’s Devil in Ohio stayed put at No. 2, with 1.38 billion minutes viewed/eight episodes, followed by Prime Video’s The Rings of Power (1.2 billion minutes/three eligible episodes), Netflix’s Stranger Things (600 million minutes/34 episodes) and the first four episodes of Disney’s She-Hulk (493 million minutes).

Ryan Murphy’s Jeffrey Dahmer series “Monster” overpowered the Netflix top 10 rankings this week, taking the No. 1 spot with 196.2 million hours viewed following its Sept. 21 premiere. During the Sept. 19-Sept. 25 viewing window, the 10-episode limited series knocked “Cobra Kai” Season 5 off of its pedestal and down to the third spot.

Season 2 of “Fate: The Winx Saga” stayed at the No. 2 spot for the second week. The second installment of the fantasy series, which premiered on the streamer on Sept. 16, earned nearly 61 million hours viewed in its first full week of availability. The show’s first season also appeared at No. 5, more than a year after its Jan. 2021 release. It received 20.3 million hours watched during the measured window.

The fifth season of “Cobra Kai” dropped in viewership during its second full week on Netflix. The show raked in 38.1 million hours viewed –– a drastic fall from the previous week’s 95.6 million hours viewed.

“Monster — Dahmer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” the limited drama series co-created by Ryan Murphy and starring Evan Peters as the infamous serial killer, has debuted atop the Netflix Top 10 English TV list with 196.2 million hours viewed, making it the most-viewed title this week. Released Sept. 21, “Dahmer” has sparked questions on social media concerning the ethics of dramatizing the real-life story for entertainment purposes, with the victims’ own family members saying it is “retraumatizing” them.

Only Squid Game, All of Us Are Dead, season four of Stranger Things and season two of Bridgerton have beaten it in that period and the limited series beat shows such as Inventing Anna, which opened with 195.97M viewers, and the third season of You, which scored 179M.

Season 1 of “The Crown” continued its reign on the list, moving up to the third spot with 40.8 million hours viewed, while Season 2 of the series entered the list with 16.7 million hours viewed.

“The Imperfects” slipped to fourth place in its first full week of watching, despite gaining viewership. The series garnered 35 million hours watched last week. The sci-fi drama earned 24 million hours during the previous week after its Sept.

“Cobra Kai” Season 5 has once again clinched the first spot in the Netflix Top 10 in the second week since its premiere, with 95.6 million hours viewed. Also, the English TV list was led by “Cobra Kai” Season 5, which garnered 106.7 million hours viewed, upon its debut Sept. 9. It was followed by the limited series “Devil in Ohio,” which logged 70.8 million viewing hours in its second week. The British royal drama has entered Netflix’s Top Ten list this week following the Monarch’s death. It has entered in seventh spot with 17.57M hours viewed.

The first season of The Crown premiered in 2016, long before the streamer started putting out detailed top ten rankings.

The Peter Morgan-created drama series kicked off by starring Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II and Matt Smith as Prince Philip.

It traced her life from her wedding in 1947 to 1955, taking in the death of King George VI, promoting Elizabeth’s ascension to the throne, leading up to resignation of Winston Churchill as prime minister.

Vanessa Kirby, Jared Harris and John Lithgow also starred.

The series, which is heading into its fifth season in November, is produced by Left Bank Pictures and Sony Pictures Television.
