About us
British Cinematographer is Europe's no.1 magazine covering the art and craft of international cinematography. British Cinematographer Magazine was created to celebrate the work of cinematographers – those creative artists who collaborate with directors and play the pivotal role of bringing their visions, and their scripts, to life as moving images. Since 2004, British Cinematographer Magazine has developed and evolved into as an essential read for cinematographers and all those associated with the art of cinematography. We continue to strive to get inside the hearts and minds of these talented, image-making artists, and to enquire “why” they make their creative choices before we discover “how” they put their ideas into action. Our bi-monthly publication magazine has expanded from its British-focused origins to also encompass the talents of the greatest cinematographers worldwide – whether they are working on small-budget independents or the largest Hollywood blockbusters, shooting on celluloid or digital. More often than not, and to our great delight, British cinematographers continue to make a fair share of the best moving pictures you will ever see. As production is a collaborative, team effort we also include the other talented people, plus dedicated service companies and manufacturers, who are engaged in the ever-evolving image-making pipeline – from camera into post production and beyond.

We’re celebrating Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival today by looking back at last month’s incredible Opening Ceremony in which Anthony Dod Mantle ASC BSC DFF received the Cinematography Icon Award! As a media partner of the event, #BritishCinematographer was honoured to host a panel session exploring colour as part of the festival’s #Cinematography Focus strand. Anthony Dod Mantle and Diana Olifirova joined BC’s Zoe Mutter to discuss the role colour plays in their storytelling, sharing tips and techniques with the audience while talking them through scenes in their cinematographic creations. 📸: Johanna Gunnberg

Across the film and TV industry steps are being taken to address the global climate crisis. While progress is being made, there is still some way to go until green approaches are adopted across the board which is why we felt sustainability was important to highlight in the Focus On series. This free guide is an educational resource outlining the ways in which your production can reduce its carbon footprint, from power and travel (some of the biggest culprits for carbon emissions) through to lighting, catering, and set design. It also celebrates the productions – such as True Detective: Night Country, The Essex Serpent, and Rivages – and people behind them setting sustainable standards while fulfilling the creative vision. Initiatives such as BAFTA albert’s carbon calculator are supporting the industry’s environmental transition and allowing increasingly accurate data collection. But, as is outlined in this guide, sustainability is everyone’s responsibility on set. Therefore we speak to those in a variety of positions, from cinematographers and gaffers through to sustainability coordinators to find out how they are advocating for sustainable approaches on their productions. You’ll also find words of wisdom in comment pieces from those at the heart of associations and organisations addressing the global climate crisis such as the BSC Sustainability Committee, BAFTA albert, the Production Guild of Great Britain, Film London, and 60FortyFilms. So, whether it’s introducing electric vehicles, switching to LED fixtures or incorporating hybrid systems to reduce energy and resource consumption, we hope this publication helps productions create impactful and meaningful change. “When I found out that Bridgerton was being shot on the Venice, I was very happy about that because I’m used to the camera and I like the look of it. I hadn’t used Signature Primes before and I didn’t get to really do tests with them beforehand, but I’d seen the show, I saw what they looked like. They’re gorgeous lenses, so it’s kind of like if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Alicia Robbins on using the Sony Venice (Sony | Professional Europe) when capturing the wonderful world of Bridgerton.
