Departments
The National Archaeological Museum has seven (7) Departments:
1. Department of Sculpture Collection
2. Department of Vases, Metalwork and Minor Arts Collections
3. Department of Prehistoric, Egyptian, Cypriot and Near Eastern Antiquities Collection
4. Department of Conservation, Physical-Chemical Research and Archaeometry
5. Department of Exhibitions, Communication and Education
6. Department of Technical Support and Museography
7. Department of Administrative and Financial Support
Department of Sculpture Collection
in charge of:
a) research, study, recording, protection, rescue, highlighting, publication, photographic documentation and promotion of the works of sculpture.
b) permission granting for the study of ancient objects and permission granting for the exportation of cultural objects not-protected by the current legislation.
c) planning, designing and organization of archaeological exhibitions (temporary or permanent) in collaboration with the Department of Exhibitions, Communication and Education, as well as the Department of Technical Support and Museography.
Department of Vases, Metalwork and Minor Arts Collections
in charge of:
a) research, study, recording, protection, rescue, highlighting, publication, photographic documentation and promotion of the vases, figurines, jewellery, sealstones, ivory objects of historic times, as well as glass vases.
b) research, study, recording, protection, rescue, highlighting, publication, photographic documentation and promotion of the ancient metalwork objects of the Museum, made of bronze, silver, gold, iron and lead, as well as large-scale sculptures in metal.
c) planning, designing and organization of archaeological exhibitions (temporary or permanent) in collaboration with the Department of Exhibitions, Communication and Education, as well as the Department of Technical Support and Museography.
d) permission granting for the study of ancient objects and permission granting for the exportation of cultural objects not-protected by the current legislation.
Department of Prehistoric, Egyptian, Cypriot and Near Eastern Antiquities Collection
in charge of:
a) research, study, recording, protection, rescue, highlighting, publication, photographic documentation and promotion of the Prehistoric, Egyptian, Cypriot and Near Eastern antiquities, irrespective of material.
b) permission granting for the study of ancient objects and permission granting for the exportation of cultural objects not-protected by the current legislation.
c) planning, designing and organization of archaeological exhibitions (temporary or permanent) in collaboration with the Department of Exhibitions, Communication and Education, as well as the Department of Technical Support and Museography.
Department of Conservation, Physical-Chemical Research and Archaeometry
in charge of:
a) the cleaning, conservation, restoration and aesthetic presentation of the Museum’s objects and exhibits of all kinds. Furthermore, preparation of conservation studies and support of the permanent and temporary exhibitions.
b) supervision of the orderly operation of the laboratories for the conservation of vases, metals, sculptures, casts, organic materials, paper, photographic film negatives, as well as of the Laboratory of Physical-Chemical Research and Archaeometry.
c) research on the methods and materials of conservation, diagnostic identification of the mechanisms and effects of wear on ancient objects.
d) archaeometric research.
e) preparation of studies on the conservation and protection of antiquities and works of art, as well as their supervision and implementation.
f) record-keeping of conservation projects and studies, scientific works and documentation works.
Department of Exhibitions, Communication and Education
in charge of:
a) preparation and implementation of museological studies and the exhibition of ancient objects. Planning, organization and presentation of archaeological, permanent and temporary exhibitions, in collaboration with the other departments of the Museum and the relevant Directorates of the Central Service.
b) planning, organization, presentation and assessment of educational and other programmes, activities and events.
c) communication management and promotion of the activities of the Museum.
Department of Technical Support and Museography
in charge of:
a) technical works and conservation/ maintenance of the entire range of building infrastructure installations of the Museum and its outdoor spaces, in collaboration with the related Services of the General Directorate for the Restoration, Museums and Technical Works.
b) management and maintenance of the entire range of the electronic, electrical and mechanical (H/M) systems of the Museum, as well as of the special utility vehicles, which are used for the support of the Η/Μ installations and other exhibition needs of the Museum.
c) technical support of the Museum’s exhibitions (permanent and temporary), as well as development of the relevant museographic design in collaboration with the Department of Exhibitions, Communication and Education.
d) undertaking or/ and preparation of studies for the maturing of projects to be integrated into co-funded programmes.
e) supervision of cleaning and orderly function of the Museum.
Department of Administrative and Financial Support
in charge of:
a) management of all administrative matters, especially those related to the staff, correspondence and internal function, processing of all financial affairs, statistical data monitoring, keeping of protocol and archive of documents.
b) management of co-funded projects.
c) operation and maintenance of its state-owned vehicles.
d) granting of permissions for free entrance to the Museum, on the basis of current legislation.
e) carrying out all kinds of contracts, project provisions, studies, commodities and services, in the domain of its responsibility.
