Perth indie pop heroes Spacey Jane have unveiled their first new music in more than a year.
Officially released yesterday with a video shot in a Fremantle hostel, Lots of Nothing was performed during the quartet’s recent sold-out national tour.
Frontman Caleb Harper wrote the infectious new track during one of the popular group’s breaks from playing concerts due to COVID-19.
“Lockdown forced a lot of thoughts and quiet moments ... sort of discovering a version of myself,” Harper explained.
“Lots of Nothing is about wrestling with the parts of yourself that you don’t like and how you can see those traits as a whole other person.
“It’s about trying to accept all the parts of yourself, good and bad, before you are able to work on the person that you want to become.”
The singer, who is joined in Spacey Jane by guitarist Ashton Le Cornu, bassist Peppa Lane and drummer Kieran Lama, said their follow-up to acclaimed 2020 debut Sunlight is “around 60 per cent done”.
“We’ve got around 15 tracks that are fully or partly recorded,” Harper said, before adding that fans should not expect the band’s second album before next year.
Spacey Jane have been voracious tourists in 2021, albeit with postponements due to COVID-19 outbreaks and Harper losing his voice for a few weeks due to an upper respiratory infection in early April.
The Geraldton-raised singer and guitarist said the band, whose song Booster Seat came second in the Triple J Hottest 100 earlier this year, are planning a return to overseas touring next year.
“For us, it’s the most important thing we do,” Harper said. “We’re a live band by definition. That’s what people have come to appreciate about us most, I think.
“It’s the thing we love doing the most. Being on stage and on the road is certainly our happy place.
“Being able to look people in the eye and sing along with them, have those moments, is really the main reason we do our thing. It’s so satisfying.”
