Motivation
[edit]The The Encyclopedia of Cacti (Q111475261) aims to be a comprehensive encyclopaedia for all cacti species. It provides the accepted Latin name for most species, subspecies, variety, forms, and cultivars, with links to all synonyms by which the plant has been known. It contains 441 plant genera and includes 17776 scientific names and synonyms. 6810 taxa and cultivars have individual description sheets, 2237 of which are accepted scientific names, 419 cultivars names and 14934 synonyms. The encyclopedia is illustrated with 12217 plant photos (see http://www.llifle.com/Encyclopedia/CACTI/). UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 23:20, 3 April 2022 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]- Oppose - uncurated database full of errors. --Succu (talk) 18:49, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
- Succu can you reference some of these errors? Does this database have more errors than most? Additionally, this database appears to be curated by volunteers...a lot like Wikidata... I see no problem with a crowdsourced database run by enthusiasts. --Crystal Clements, University of Washington Libraries (talk) 23:41, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Succu: can you explain BrokenSegue (talk)?
- Acanthocalycium chionanthum (Example 1) is a misspelling of Acanthocalycium thionanthum (Q337710). --Succu (talk) 20:14, 21 October 2022 (UTC)
- According to [1] the first refers to the plant having white flowers. I suppose they have originally classified as different species and then merged (as usually happens). Also according to [2] and [3] they're just synonims. @Succu: If you don't provide some data supporting the "full of errors" claim, I'd be going to mark the property as ready. --Horcrux (talk) 07:34, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
- My fault, both exists. But the accepted name of Acanthocalycium chionanthum (Q109397105) is Acanthocalycium thionanthum (Q337710) not Echinopsis thionantha (Q15315198). The accepted name of Echinopsis leucantha (Q1280588) is missing. Since 2012 it's Acanthocalycium leucanthum (Q92312076)! --Succu (talk) 21:58, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
- Another example: the accepted name of Acanthocalycium andreaeanum (Q109396998) is Eriosyce strausiana (Q1354839) not Eriosyce kattermannii (does not exist). --Succu (talk) 22:48, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
- The accepted subspcies Acanthocalycium thionanthum subsp. ferrarii (Q109570946) is missing. --Succu (talk) 01:05, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
- If you need another example: Acanthocereus with no accepted species! For the correct systematic see e.g. here. --Succu (talk) 01:22, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

- Done as Encyclopedia of Cacti species ID (P12336). I have no opinion on the quality of the data, but presumably if it's crowdsourced any errors will ultimately be fixed, which sounds acceptable. @UWashPrincipalCataloger, Clements.UWLib, Succu: Infrastruktur (talk) 12:43, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
