Motivation
[edit]Like GWN, the NIWA (Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance (Q101561553)) operates as a network of wikis rather than a wiki farm. This network is specifically dedicated to covering video games associated to Nintendo. In contains the following wikis:
This list is periodically updated by a bot. Manual changes to the list will be removed on the next update!
WDQS | PetScan | TABernacle | Find images | Recent changes | Query:SELECT ?item WHERE { ?item wdt:P463 wd:Q101561553. }
End of automatically generated list.
Ids can be resolved at niwanetwork.org/wiki/Special:Interwiki.
Some wikis already have a specialized property (see table above). Therefore the proposed property should not be used to link items with those.

- Question Looking at the table above − what’s the story with Square Enix Wiki (Q123422194) ? Is it NIWA or GWN? Jean-Fred (talk) 21:38, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
- Neither. There's a third network called SEIWA (Square Enix Independent Wiki Alliance), they're a part of that. SEIWA is affiliated with both NIWA and the GWN though. RampantSpirit (talk) 15:17, 9 December 2023 (UTC)

- Comment I don't think this will work in because the domains are different. Only very few insiders will know that those wikis can be linked with NIWA article ID. The examples above don't even use the interwiki, but the direct URLs. Matthias M. (talk) 09:08, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
- what do you mean by The examples above? Shisma (talk) 08:15, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
- I think that the examples in the proposal form use
https://harddrop.com/wiki/Alexey_Pajitnov
and nothttps://niwanetwork.org/wiki/harddrop:Alexey_Pajitnov
Jean-Fred (talk) 08:58, 11 December 2023 (UTC)- Ah, Ic. The proposal says Alexey Pajitnov (Q92600)→
harddrop:Alexey_Pajitnov
: the value would beharddrop:Alexey_Pajitnov
. The formatter url would turn that into niwanetwork.org/wiki/harddrop:Alexey_Pajitnov. The urls I used there were just as an illustration because the resolver service didn't exist back then. I fixed the links to use it – Shisma (talk) 10:39, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

- Comment Hmmm, I find Matthias M.’ argument has merits ; at the same time this situation is the same as Wikidata:Property proposal/Gaming Wiki Network article ID which we approved so… Jean-Fred (talk) 08:27, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
- Comment Looking at https://niwanetwork.org/wiki/Special:Interwiki, there are a couple of things I notice:
- some wikis have several interwiki prefixes. We probably want to enforce one of these (using constraints?)
- there is not always an easy mapping between domain and prefix: for example,
goldensunwiki.net
→goldensun:
is obvious,mutecity.org
→fzerowiki:
is not. That might have made some identifier input script easier? Jean-Fred (talk) 08:27, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
- @SuperHamster: maybe we can add the domains themself as a prefix? – Shisma (talk) 20:24, 17 December 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for the ping. NIWA Coordinator here.
- I don't think using the domains themselves is very future proof. We could one day have multiple wikis under one domain, if we ever have multiple language wikis sharing a domain (e.g. example.com/en and example.com/de). We have also seen domains change over the years (like when Zelda Wiki moved to Gamepedia, then Fandom, then back to independence at zeldawiki.wiki).
- That being said, I've just created a new forwarding service at the top-level NIWA website: niwanetwork.org/go. I think this helps solve a few concerns when compared to using the Nintendo Wiki's interwiki table:
- As a new service controlled at the org level, we can easily adjust site IDs in response to any feedback here (I've marked it as beta until they're finalized).
- Better longevity and consistency in the future, vs. an individual wiki's interwiki table that is more subject to change.
- One prefix per site, instead of the multiples we see on Nintendo Wiki.
- The page itself provides more user-friendly documentation, which can be helpful to Wikidata editors and general users.
- Example of a redirect under this system: niwanetwork.org/go/nookipedia/Tom_Nook.
- Hopefully this helps resolve some concerns above (CC @Jean-Frédéric, Matthias M., Shisma). Let me know what you think and if anything needs changing. Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 09:57, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
- assuming that every topic/franchise will forever have a single wiki (per language) in NIWA I'd propose to use the shortest possible name:
inkipedia
→splatoon
(replace name with topic, drop the pedia)fzerowiki
→fzero
(drop the wiki)strategywiki
→strategy
(drop the wiki)supermariowiki
→supermario
(drop the wiki)mariowikide
→de.supermario
(drop the wiki and prepend the language)harddrop
→tetris
(replace name with topic)
- and so on – Shisma (talk) 11:13, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
- there are going to be a lot of match patterns like in Miraheze article ID. But that's fine I guess Shisma (talk) 15:25, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
- I was going to answer − I really start wondering whether we would not be better off with a property for each of these wikis. It’s not that many of them anyhow. Jean-Fred (talk) 21:20, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
