Pierre-Simon, marquis de Laplace (23. april 1749. - 5. mart 1827. godine) je bio francuski matematičar i astronom, čiji su radovi bili osnov za razvoj matematičke astronomije. Sumirao je i proširio radove svojih prethodnika u svojoj knjizi od pet svezaka pod nazivom Mécanique Céleste (Nebeska mehanika) (1799-1825. godine). Ovaj rad je proučavanje klasične mehanike pomoću geometrije zamijenio proučavanjem na osnovu kalkulusa, štoje otvorilo veći spektar problema za rješavanje.
