Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

When to crop and when not to crop
editI brought up the wider issue of cropping here, mentioning the memorial example, so I thought you might like to comment there on that and on the other examples. Carcharoth (Commons) (talk) 02:25, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
File:Korean_War_Veterans_Memorial_Without_Soldiers.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. - Wanted to drop off a personal note, as the template is rather impersonal. We've discussed this before, and after thinking about it for a week or so, I felt nominating for deletion was the best way to get this resolved, as I do think that: (a) it is disrespectful to do this to a photo of a memorial (regardless of actual intention, and I know you did this with the best of intentions); and (b) the sculptor might genuinely object to this. I would suggest contacting the sculptor, but want to see what the opinions of others are first. Carcharoth (Commons) (talk) 14:32, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
- You are both invited to the other discussions relating to photos of this memorial at Commons:Deletion requests/2010/07/26. — Jeff G. ツ 22:53, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
- excuse me for butting in, but instead of all the work fuzzing it up, why not migrate back to english wikipedia, slap a PD 3D tag on it, and add to article. this is merely one example of thousands of old PD photos in commons, for which there is no process to clean up. i see you made the same argument, the image deletionists lose credibility, when such common sense is not implemented.
