Colors On old "Class I Railroad" maps

edit

re: File:Chicago and Alton Railroad system map (1918).svg

For those of us that are colorblind... The route map has the main line through Illinois, and the branch heading through Indiana. There is a tiny section in central Illinois that I believe is PURPLE - and also several "lines" that appear like rivers. I cannot tell if they are, in fact, rivers - or PURPLE "trackage rights" railways.

This happens MANY times. Those that are not colorblind don't understand the difficulty. Having dots, dashes, broken lines, and combinations of these, will help - even if they are also colored.

Thank you. Please email me: tapwestport@aol.com (I tried to log in normally to get your email, but it failed. Thanks. -TA

Please use specific categories

edit

Hello and thank you for your hard work uploading old maps of the Long Island Rail Road! Could I please ask that you tag images with more specific categories than Category:Maps? Since it is such a broad category, it tends to fill up very quickly if people don't use its more specific subcategories. Only recently, the category spanned several pages, making it difficult to overview its subcategories and contents, and we just got done sorting out most of the mess.

Only knowing that something is a map isn't very usually useful for locating images of a certain kind. In a way, this is as imprecise as placing all photos in a single category or placing all Wikipedia articles in a category called "articles." Using specific categories, however, helps people locate what they are looking for.

In the case of LIRR maps, the categories that seem most applicable are Category:Old railroad maps of the United States and Category:Old maps of New York. You might even create Category:Old railroad maps of New York, which could be a subcategory to those two categories as well as of Category:Railroad maps of New York. You might even be more specific than that, since you're uploading several images related to the same railroad and create Category:Old maps of the Long Island Rail Road, probably with Old railroad maps of New York (as previously described) as an intermediary category.

You changed this from "PD-because|it was published first in the U.S. in 1900." to template:PD-US. However, PD-US states that it may not be in the public domain in some countries, while it's my understanding that anything published first in the U.S. before 1923 is in the public domain everywhere. Isn't the first template thus preferable, because it doesn't introduce uncertainty? --NE2 19:53, 25 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

In my opinion the Journal from which the image was scanned has authors and therefore there is a certain uncertainty because there might be countries were the image is still copyrighted as I understand the template. Another case would be if the journal / the image has no specific author (the author is anonymous) and therefor after over 100 years the images could be tagged as {{PD-old}}. --ALE! ¿…? 10:05, 27 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Second Avenue Subway maps

edit

I was wondering if you could create SVG maps for NYC's Second Avenue Subway lines, so an infobox could be added to the article. I found this official map of the new line at the MTA's website, so this could give you an idea of how to map out the new Q and T routes. I was going to create the files myself based on another NYCS SVG map, but it seemed to involved for me to get the lines accurate, so I was hoping you could take care of it. –Dream out loud 22:03, 12 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

SVG map problem

edit

I created a map for the former JFK Express subway route based off of your A service map and uploaded it as Image:NYCS map JFK.svg. The first time I uploaded it after creating it in Illustrator, and it wouldn't even display a thumbnail. I went back and did it over again in Inkscape, but now I uploaded it and there is a problem with the text. Out of the three text boxes on the page, two of them don't show, and the other one displays as a solid black box. I was hoping you could figure out what the problem is. Thanks. –Dream out loud 04:23, 16 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I fixed the problem, and I was able to successfully add an infobox to the JFK Express article. You may want to tweak the map a bit just to make sure its up to par with the other ones you've created. I don't have much experience with uploading SVG files, but I think I figured it out pretty much. –Dream out loud 18:42, 16 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

NYC subway

edit

hello NE2 and thank you for your message,

I think having both is a good solution. I feel that stations need to be categorised by location, because nobody knows what the lines are called from their companies except by their numbers or letters. Someone who searches for a station orientates himself according to the street and location. I have now created categories for the companies as well to address your concern, you can take a look at Category:86th Street (New York City Subway) and Category:IND Eighth Avenue Line stations for example. I hope this solution will be satisfactory. sincerely Gryffindor 04:30, 23 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

File:Toll Florida 570.svg

edit

You changed the "toll" background to yellow, noting "at least one yellow shield has been recently posted". Where? I've never seen a yellow toll road sign for the Polk Parkway or any other FL SR toll road (at least in Central Florida...haven't driven much in S FL). Is this an official change by FDOT (or the Turnpike Enterprise) that will be made to all signs? Source? If not, it should be left green as that's the style of almost all the signs (and all the one's I've ever seen). I can't find anything on the web regarding a change to yellow searching with Google (could just be the wrong search terms, but I tried a few combinations). It could just be an incompetent contractor (I've seen a few, like a directional sign to 27 using the FL SR sign...there isn't a FL SR27...instead of U.S. 27 which is about a mile from that sign). AHeneen (talk) 02:23, 5 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

This has been the new standard for the past few years, in lieu of the MUTCD-standard separate TOLL banner being used above Turnpike shields. Here's a new yellow-toll 570 shield: http://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=2017.msg295780#msg295780 --NE2 (talk) 09:31, 6 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Superseded images

edit

NE2, you removed author and license information from a whole bunch of files like File:Connecticut Highway 16.svg, see Category:Media without a license: needs history check. Our usual policy is not to delete superseded files and add Template:Tl\Vector version available, see Commons talk:Superseded images policy and Commons:Deletion_policy#Redundant.2Fbad_quality. Could you revert your edits? You are welcome to nominate files for deletion, but you can not remove author and license info. --Jarekt (talk) 13:16, 30 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

I'm not going to follow a nonsense policy, especially one that was probably written before image redirects existed. --NE2 (talk) 14:03, 2 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
You can lobby for changing the policy (you will have my vote) or you can nominate files for deletion, but in the mean time can you restore the metadata and license information to those files? All files on Commons are required to have a license template. --Jarekt (talk) 14:27, 2 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
They're all public domain, same as what they're duplicates of. --NE2 (talk) 15:04, 2 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Than please restore, the required {{Information}} template and license to the following files:

--Jarekt (talk) 15:54, 2 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Why not redirect? --NE2 (talk) 21:24, 2 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Redirect is something we do after we delete an image, but those files do not meet any current criteria for deletion, so they will probably stay. You can open a deletion request to delete them and if you succeed you can redirect them but in the mean time you should fix the descriptions. --Jarekt (talk) 04:06, 3 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
A redirect would also fix the description. --NE2 (talk) 13:15, 3 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway system map (1918).svg

edit

Well, assuming that you're still active and thus will see this, I'd like a copy of that ARCGIS file you made for the MKT railroad, circa 1918. Additionally, if you have similar files for the:

Texas and Pacific Railroad;

Houston and Texas Central Railroad;

Fort Worth & Denver (City?) Railway, a subsidiary of the Colorado and Southern Railway, which itself was owned by Burlington Route. I'm not sure why C&S continued on as a legal entity, but FW&DC remained separate because Texas law required all railroads operating in Texas to be incorporated in Texas and headquartered there;

Chicago, Rock Island, and Gulf Railway, a subsidiary of the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railway (better known as simply "Rock Island") (for the same reason as above, I assume);

Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway, a subsidiary of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway;

St. Louis, San Francisco and Texas Railway, a subsidiary of the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway (aka Frisco);

St. Louis Southwestern Railway of Texas, a subsidiary of the St. Louis Southwestern Railway (aka the "Cotton Belt Route");

Trinity and Brazos Valley Railway, which, by 1905, was owned 50/50 by Burlington Route (well, technically Colorado and Southern, but since it was owned by Burlington itself soon after, same difference) and Rock Island; it was reorganized as the Burlington-Rock Island Railroad.

And could send any of those to me as well, that'd be AWESOME.

Sincerely,

MagicCarpetMadeofSteel
