Hello Rodw!
Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.
To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.
You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.
The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!
Thank you. 85.182.126.61 12:18, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:34, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

Additions to Category:Kennet and Avon canal
editHi, I see you are adding images like Wire Bridge and Lock, Kennet and Avon Canal - geograph.org.uk - 406494.jpg to Category:Kennet and Avon canal. In many cases the existing Category:Wire Lock is already a child of Category:Canal Locks on the Kennet and Avon canal which is then a child of Category:Kennet and Avon canal. Did you intend the image to be in both the child and parent / parent category? Scillystuff (talk) 15:31, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the response, I didn't want to start undoing part of your work and cause an argument if you were intentionally adding them to the K&A parent. The deluge of Geograph images has swamped the existing category system and it's going to take a while to sort it out. There are 10,000 alone from Dr Neil Clifton. editHi Rod. Some superb pictures, especially the one of the staircase. I trust you did not ask them. When I did I was told they had a "strict policy" of allowing pictures only for private use. Else one had to request from their authorised picture library. I don't suppose they ever actually take any legal action, although they also told me they were involved in a "long running dispute" with Wikipedia. But, in my opinion, they are very useful additions to that article. Maybe I should upload mine. Yours, jealously, Martinevans123 (talk) 22:16, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
WLM organization in the UK
editThanks for indicating your interest in this. I'd like to get some proper teams in place now, so we can decide who will be doing what, and I wonder if you could go to Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 in the United Kingdom/People and move your signature to the correct heading? Many thanks, --MichaelMaggs (talk) 14:57, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

editDear Rodw, thanks for your photos from the tank museum, hope you had a nice time there. I've put a few in as a gallery in the next monthly GLAM report. Valued images
editHi Rodw, have you been through the Valued Image process before? It's one of Commons' way of recognising good photos. The [[criteria are straightforward, images have to be:
- Is the most valuable illustration of its kind on Wikimedia Commons
- Is nominated as being the most valuable within a suitably generic scope
- Must illustrate its subject well
- Is fully described on the image page
- Is geocoded, when relevant
- Is well categorized at an appropriate level
I reckon some of your photos probably match those criteria. I was browsing some of the WLm photos andtwo that popped out are File:Bell Hotel EH 1201210.jpg and File:Abbey Mill EH 1201285 from north 2.jpg (the latter might need adjusting slightly to make the vertical lines vertical, if that makes sense). File tagging File:Ralph Allens Town House.jpg
editThis media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Ralph Allens Town House.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Ralph Allens Town House.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

I am unsure how to proceed on this one. The image was taken by my father in law, Neil Wishart, who gave me verbal permission to upload the file (in fact he took it at my request). He has since died and can not give any sort of permission.Rodw (talk) 20:11, 17 January 2016 (UTC)
- Hi! I'm sorry to hear about your father in law's passing. While the quoted statement on the page isn't quite as detailed as our standard release template, it does explicitly mention the public domain (and I believe the copyright should actually be PD-author rather than Copyrighted free use based on that), so if you have the original e-mail, forwarding it to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org should suffice. Thanks, —LX (talk, contribs) 21:53, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

- Oh right I see now & had forgotten - the entire email was "Hi Rod I have tried to upload the photo to wikipedia without success so please accept the renamed photo attached as your own and for Public Domain NEIL <neilwishart at supanet.com>" what do you want me to do with it?Rodw (talk) 16:55, 18 January 2016 (UTC)
- If you still have that e-mail, please forward it to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. —LX (talk, contribs) 21:57, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments UK 2019!
editHi
Thank you so much for contributing to the UK section of this year's Wiki Loves Monuments contest, which finished yesterday. We really do appreciate the time and effort you've put in to record the UK's built cultural heritage for future generations.
Your contribution has been been added to our collections here on Wikimedia Commons, and is already available for editors to make use of on Wikipedia and elsewhere. It has also been entered into this year's contest. If you'd like to see your own images, just click on the uploads link at the top right of this page (if you don't see it, click on the Log in option first).
We've received over 10,000 UK entries this year, and it will take a few weeks for our volunteers and professional judges to decide on the final top 10. The winners will be announced by the end of this month, both here on Wikimedia Commons and also on the competition website.
The top 10 UK images will go forward to the international section where they will compete against winners from some 50 other countries. The international winners should be announced here in December.
Don't forget, by the way, that if you're hoping to win a prize in the contest it's essential that you have enabled email in your Wikimedia preferences. If you haven't, you're not eligible to win. If you're unsure, please check here.
Once again, many thanks for your help! MichaelMaggs (talk) 15:58, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
