Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Welcome, also. If you have questions feel free to put a note on my talk page. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 15:16, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
I have deleted this once and you have recreated it. If
- you intend to create a category, then you must use the name Category:Matrei am brenner, or, if it is a town name, probably Category:Matrei am Brenner.
- you intend to create a gallery of images, then you must put some images in it before saving

Tip: Categorizing images
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:57, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

File tagging File:Quebecair F27 CF-QBD.jpg
This media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Quebecair F27 CF-QBD.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

Hi Chesipiero, do you feel it will add value to commons to put all mountains into the lowest possible administrative unit? For all units? You just started here, there is a lot of mountains to recat in case of following your implicit proposal, but I would like to ask you if returning to a leaf category per federal state like Category:Mountains of Tyrol (which you did not remove for the mountains in Bezirk Reutte, thanks a lot for that), could be possible. ciao --Herzi Pinki (talk) 17:37, 11 November 2011 (UTC)
Hallo, I was working in Bezirk Reutte, as all the others Districts in Tyrol, to organize the category. I checked the Villages name and I found the Monutains name too. I decided to create the category Mountains of Bezirk Reutte just to separate from the Villages, the category is in Category: Mountains of Tyrol too. Suggest me the way to separate the "Mountains" from the "Villages" in Bezirk Reutte. Bis bald. User:Chesipiero
- Yes I saw that, but you also have been creating a complete new and deeper level for mountains. I just wanted you to halt before you run after one Bezirk after the other. I had a look at some other districts in Tirol, and I didn't find any other mountain. So my proposal would be to remove categorization for Category:Mountains of Bezirk Reutte completely and also the cat itself. IMO there some problems with too fine grained subcats:
- Finding an object gets more difficult (you eventuelly habe to know the district, not only the federal state).
- Even with proper cat-description (which only few people do add; you didn't; and nobody reads) the cat could be seen as an example for COM:OVERCAT, what will guide a user one day to remove it from what is looking as the parent cat Category:Mountains of Tyrol. Which would be wrong for mountains at the border of the district, unless they have been added to the other Bezirk's category.
- It makes the cat tree asymmetric - unless you plan to add categories for each district. (which does not make that much sense, as there are also rather flat aereas in Austria).
- What do you think? Thank you for cleaning up those Tirol related categories anyhow. (btw: you can use four tildes to put your signature here: ~~~~) ciao --Herzi Pinki (talk) 19:55, 11 November 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks, requested speedy deletion for category. --Herzi Pinki (talk) 21:38, 11 November 2011 (UTC)
Aviation Wikiproject on Commons?
Hey mate, I've had an idea of starting an Aviation WikiProject on Commons. I have created a page at User talk:Russavia/Proposal where I hope that if other editors think this is a good idea, we can all come up with ideas, etc. Please keep all comments on that page for time being, and if you know of other editors on Commons or on other language projects who might be interested in commenting, coming up with ideas, etc, please let them know of the discussion. Let's see if this could be a workable project. russavia (talk) 12:18, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

Hello!
When you create categories related with Italian armed forces, don't forget to link them adequately, like this. --21:53, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

- At least this (already in Category:F-18 in the Finnish Air Force and Category:OH-FMM (aircraft)), this and this (already in Category:Midnight Hawks). And let's keep the discussion in one place (it was started here). I have your talk page in my watchlist, so I will notice any replies. ––Apalsola t • c 17:11, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Deletion of en-interwikis
Hi Chesipiero, I do not understand your deletion of interwikis to en: like here or here. The articles exist and are valid in the English Wikipedia. Could you explain please? Thanks. Raymond 15:49, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
The links to the en-interwikis are present on the top of the Category page.Chesipiero (talk) 16:02, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for your explanation. I see what you mean but you are wrong. These lines on the top of the Category page are language templates only but they do NOT create interwiki links. They are missing on the left side. For example Category:Spanair. Do you see ca/en/es interwiki links there? I don't. Please revert your last changes. Thanks. Raymond 17:43, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Hey Piergiuliano, I've noticed that you uploaded literally tons of good pictures showing South Tyrolean cultural heritage monuments (and maybe you've noticed me, too, while adding categories and monument-tags). Since I assume that you're interested in this topic, I just wanted to bring to your notice that there is a related project on the German wikipedia. In the past months we've created monuments lists for each municipality in preparation for the contest, they might be useful for your work on Commons. If you have any kind of questions, suggestions and so on, we'll be glad to answer those on our talk page (I guess you're fine with German as well?). Raoli ✉ (talk) 22:47, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Category:Gloster aircraft sorting
Hello,
I was wondering what point do you have in adding sort keys to aircraft categories in Category:Gloster aircraft, such as this? Since all Gloster aircraft categories begin with "Gloster", the sort order of the categories is the same as it was before only sorted at "*" instead of "G". This seems rather meaningless. Category:Aircraft manufacturers
Hi, Chesipiero. Re Category:Aircraft manufacturers, and your recent work involving that category. Please note that the cat is for companies, not aircraft, but there is some crossover between this cat and Category:Aircraft by manufacturer, particularly to help disambiguation. A category for the full company name can be justified:
- 1. If the company name is long and complicated, or not easily recognised when searching for an aircraft category (eg Société des Avions Marcel Bloch/Bloch aircraft); or
- 2. If there are files that don't come under aircraft, eg automobiles, factories, people, logos, etc.; or
- 3. If an editor has already created a category with a defunct company name, that might be useful for disambiguation (eg Air Fouga/Fouga).
I hope that you can recognise these differences, and perhaps you will consider removing some of the Xxxx aircraft cats from Category:Aircraft manufacturers where there is unnecessary duplication of simple names (eg Comac aircraft), and similarly remove duplicated companies from Category:Aircraft by manufacturer (eg Rockwell). N750PA
Hi,
you uploaded file:Pan American World Airways Boeing 747 N750PA 01.jpg. In the description you mention the name Clipper Rambler, but according to this list, the name of the plane was Clipper Neptune's Favorite. Given the length of the (illegible) name on the nose of the plane, that seems plausible to me. The dates you specified seem to be in accordance with the list.
Richardw (talk) 15:23, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
- PS: See also file:Boeing 747-121, Pan American World Airways - Pan Am AN1399875.jpg. Richardw (talk) 16:57, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
- I see... basically, the name 'Rambler' was used only a very short time (the plane was renamed the same year it was delivered to Pan Am), the picture was taken after the plane had received its new name, and the description doesn't mention the renaming. I'll add a few words. Thanks for your reply! Richardw (talk) 20:51, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

Experimental aircraft of the United States
Why did you restore "Category:Experimental aircraft of the United States" to all the X-planes after I'd just removed it? This is double categorisation since they are all in "Category:X-planes", which itself is in "Experimental aircraft of the United States". There is no need for this duplication. — Huntster (t @ c) 09:38, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
- Since you are actively working on these various categories, I'll wait a day or so before consolidating all these to the X-plane category. Thanks for your efforts! — Huntster (t @ c) 13:01, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

Ciao

Thanks for uploading File:Speranza di Gesù Alhama Valera 1.jpg.
The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Speranza di Gesù Alhama Valera 1.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Churches in Halltal has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open!
Read this message in your language
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
