Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:53, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

Avia S.199 Categories
[edit]Hi Articseahorse, I undid your addition of the "Avia S.199" category to Israeli Air Force Avia photos as the "Avia S.199 in the Israeli Air Force" category is already a subcategory of "Avia S.199". Sorry about that, but it kind of makes categories redundant when their photos are all over the place. Poliocretes (talk) 09:34, 27 November 2011 (UTC)
Autopatrol given
[edit]Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry 00:33, 11 September 2012 (UTC)
File:Egypt Spitfire.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Hi!
[edit]Adding the category copyvio doesn't really help. Next time better use Reason. Please have a look @ Commons:Deletion policy and maybe Template:Copyvio. That makes things much easier. Thanks a bunch! --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 02:35, 1 August 2013 (UTC)
Hi!
Please read Commons:CAT. The main subject is to categorize as such tanks in the background are not of interest for categories but the Image annotations tool. Just for the records: These vehicles are T-72-tanks. Regards, High Contrast (talk) 21:07, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
- One of the few questions that I have is "Can this photo be easily found if a person was looking for a Iraqi T-72?" Because I do not see anything that would cause this photo up in a search request.
Articseahorse (talk) 23:03, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
- A person that looks for Iraqi T-72s will find some files. But, on the other hand what could be a "tank" for a non-expert in this this image? As such the image annotations tool is advantageous here. --High Contrast (talk) 23:19, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
- I agree, however it seems that there are fewer photos of T-72 tanks in the Iraqi Army before 2003 then after. Even fewer of them that are not severely damaged or destroyed. Could it be possible to mention that there are Iraqi T-72s in the photo in the photo description? As far as the original category that I put down, I used that as a temporary place holder to help find people to confirm what type of tank it is. I was thinking it was a T-72 but wanted a second opinion to be sure. Articseahorse (talk) 23:39, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
- To enhance an image's description is always appreciated. You can do so. Sure. To find out which exact T-72 type it is, is rather complicated because interesting parts are covered by the soldier's arms. Nevertheless, feel free to add something to the image description. --High Contrast (talk) 00:25, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
Quick question regarding File:Convoy Leaves JB Balad.jpg
[edit]Heya, I stumbled across that file you uploaded and I had a quick question for you. I worked at JBB and from the file it the surrounding area looks like the south ECP. Anychance it is? Regards, Dainomite (talk) 03:56, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
- I think that was on the outside road on the east side of the base heading north to the main gate were you would turn right and cross that man made bridge. Our base was Fob Warhorse down the road. I think that photo was taken early in the deployment.

Aircraft categorization
[edit]Hi,
thanks for your work categorizing Eurofighter photos. Please keep in mind that photos that are categorized in one of the subcategories of Category:Eurofighter Typhoon, ideally through their registration in the form: "Category: <REG> (aircraft)", should not also be categorized in the main Category. The goal is that all aircraft are categorized in subcategories of Category:Eurofighter Typhoon according to their operator and registration.
Thanks, — Julian H.✈ (talk/files) 08:36, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Categorisation
[edit]Hi there, thanks for pitching in with helping to categorise many of the bulk aviation uploaded images. If I can just ask you to please be mindful of the categorisation for such images. Using File:Туполев Ту-154 88A773, Москва - Шереметьево RP4267.jpg as an example, here you moved the file from the check needed category to Category:Tupolev Tu-154. If you look at this, you will see the additional categories that have been added. Instead of moving from the check needed category, you may want to copy it, so that the images can still be found and checked and further categorised. I hope you can deduce from the current categories what we need on such images ideally:
- Category:XXXX in aviation in COUNTRY -- images can then be further recategorised.\
- Category:AIRLINE aircraft at AIRPORT
- Category:AIRCRAFT at AIRPORT
- Category:AIRCRAFT REGISTRATION and/or Category:AIRCRAFT (AIRLINE)
I hope this makes sense, and if you have any questions, feel free to drop me a line. Cheers, russavia (talk) 02:07, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
- Ok, I can do that. Glad to be helping out.Articseahorse (talk) 02:48, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

DoD blog cat
[edit]Hi, I was wondering at this diff. What is the benefit in removing the category to show it was published on the DoD blog on that month? It was where I uploaded the photo from. --Fæ (talk) 22:30, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- I was thinking that it is a temporary category used to sort photos until they have a better description. Articseahorse (talk) 23:33, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- No, it is intended as a means to distinguish the most important photos from the DoD's perspective, as only a small number make it to their blog each month. If a Commons user were surfing for a professional quality image relating to an event in a particular month (such as Obama visiting a certain country), this would be a good way for them to track it down. --Fæ (talk) 05:58, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

[edit]Hi What is the issue? I thought I clearly gave the source of the photos Bwmoll3 (talk) 15:49, 9 July 2014 (UTC)
- The image was not created by any branch of the US military and thus the public domain that is applied by the armed forces is not valid for use here. Also as per the information listed it was done by the European Aviation Histoical Society, 2004 not by the US Air Force. Also you have this image as being created in 1944, a computer image thirty years be for the first Personal computer was even in the works. Articseahorse (talk) 13:46, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

Davis-Monthan Air Force Base
[edit]Hi, just a heads up on applying the category for this location. The words "Davis" and "Monthan" together are sprinkled haphazardly in the descriptions and file names here, often in error. Images taken at Pima Air & Space Museum, Avra Valley (Marana), privately-owned scrapyards and other locations are outside the base, and should be categorised specifically. Also, the stored aircraft are at the Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center, in a sub-category. Strictly speaking, Category:Davis-Monthan Air Force Base should only be applied to the active use of the base, eg by 'live' aircraft. No reply necessary. PeterWD (talk) 14:20, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

NMUSAF
[edit]Hi, glad to see that we are each doing our occasional bit to diffuse stuff in NMUSAF cats. However, your two new subcats, for A-24 and MiG-15, have very long names, that get wrapped on my screen. There's no specific Commons policy on this, but wp:en does suggest avoiding creation of excessively long names. Even NMUSAF seems to recognise the limitations of its own name on its emblem eg File:National Museum of the United States Air Force.png. My own practice is generally to apply concise but sufficient cat names, while trying to align main aircraft type names with those at wp:en. Just a topic to think about. BTW, I'm currently exploring how to deal with a batch of NMUSAF images that are incorrectly named with "SAC Museum" in file names, but SDASM images generally need better organisation here, see my msg. Initial categories for aircraft
[edit]Good morning (10:15 am) - or whatever your time zone may be!
We have had occasional contact concerning aircraft, and now I would like to ask you for a favour, a certain change of habits. Both you and me have done a lot of work when it comes to dealing with photographs of aircraft.
In new files like this you have added "Gloucestershire Airport" as the only existing category. Unintentionally - but effectively - you are hiding away the files, because there is very little chance for others to find them again under a type category. I stumbled upon all those photos by pure coincidence.
For those cases in which you are unsure what the actual type is: May I kindly ask you to revert to your previous and very helpful habit to simply put things like that into the "Aircraft" category, where other experts are regularly continue to refine the categories? Thank you very much for your ongoing help, and have a nice Saturday! --Uli Elch (talk) 09:20, 12 March 2016 (UTC)
- Not a problem. Articseahorse (talk) 04:58, 14 March 2016 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Articseahorse,
I considered you might be interested in using COM:VFC for mass deletion requests of a set of related images. Regards, Sealle (talk) 16:02, 14 June 2017 (UTC)
Hi there. Since you created this category, I thought I'd share my thoughts about it. I think we can easily keep all P-80/F-80 images in the main Category:Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star. The F-80 is not a variant but the aircraft designation was changed when the US introduced a new pattern that marks fighter aircraft with an F. So I think we can redirect "Category:Lockheed F-80 Shooting Star" to its parent category and upmerge all the images. De728631 (talk) 19:19, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
- That sounds good. I was not quite sure what to do with this category.
- Alright. I'm going to move the files. De728631 (talk) 01:49, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
Wall painting in Iraq
[edit]Hi Articseahorse, I have put quite some work into the file File:Wall painting in military base in Iraq close to Iranian border, probably showing emblem of 6th border brigade of Iraq, 2008.jpg you uploaded, including improving the image quality, renaming, and providing and transferring the translation (saw too late that there was one on the talk page already, would have spared a lot of effort ;-) into the description and into annotations. I did this because I am interested in military history generally and deem this pic a valuable document, and it is one of the few of this kind on Commons. Do you have any suggestions for additions etc. on what is on file now? Pittigrilli (talk) 10:57, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for reaching out and the effort put into the photo. This photo was taken near the Iran/Iraq border in 2008. It was in a abandoned military facility of unknown purpose.
