Bernard Jaffe (1976:65)[1] asserted of Henry Cavendish (1731–1810), "There is only one likeness of Cavendish in existence — a water-color sketch which hangs in the British Museum. It was impossible to make him sit for his portrait. The painter Alexander had to sketch this one piece-meal while Cavendish was completely unaware that he was being memorialized." The National Portrait Gallery's webpage for the likeness in question says, "Henry Cavendish, probably by Christian Rosenberg, published by John Weale, after William Alexander aquatint, early 19th century. NPG d16591."[2] It also says, though, that the sitter, "Henry Cavendish (1731-1810), Physicist", was a "Sitter in 4 portraits."
