Gimme five!
There was a similar topic back in 2014, called A bunch of stuff. I really like the results from that challenge and think it is long enough ago that we could do something like this again. Focusing on the uneven number five seems a good idea to me, so photographers also can think about playing with symmetry.

Birds in Flight

OpposeFar too broad. Perhaps limit to a specific family of birds, birds in a particular habitat, or birds doing a particular activity. -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 09:35, 26 November 2020 (UTC)- Comment WRT the above opposition comment - how about changing to Birds in their Natural Habitat - that topic could allow global participation vs a specific family of birds might limit the areas that can participate. This theme was done previously in the spring of 2016. Seems like a decent amount of time has passed to do it again. —Cbuske46 (talk) 23:33, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
- I feel like well over 50% of bird photographs are taken in their natural habitat, so that's not much better as a delimiter. Maybe birds in flight? That's something specific and is doable anywhere in the world. -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 01:18, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

- Support Good idea, but restrict it to wild birds in flight (no captive / zoo inmates), and make geolocation an entry requirement - far too few of the photos on Commons are with the location information necessary for scientific use - MPF (talk) 10:11, 11 January 2021 (UTC)
- I don't think that restriction is necessary - birds in captivity are rarely seen in flight. And geolocation might not be the best idea for endangered species which are being poached. -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 20:06, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
- There are some birds that are far easier to capture in flight when they're captive. Basically everything used for falconry and other raptors used for demonstrations. I like the idea of limiting it to "wild birds in flight". Of course, "BIF"s are very hard to capture well, so we'll get lots of blurry bits, but we'll get some good stuff, too. :) — Rhododendrites talk | 15:23, 2 May 2021 (UTC)

- Question Would photos that aren't literally of entire cruise ships be admitted? For instance, Hamburg built a shore power connection for cruise ships at Hamburg Cruise Center Steinwerder, so that they could cold iron and the air quality in Hamburg would improve. But as cruise ships do not have to abide by the same emissions regulations as other ships, or as land-based power plants, it is cheaper for them to run their motors, so the infrastructure has had little effect on smog. Would photos of the cold-ironing connection, or even the smog, be admissible? Some cruise ships carry sensors that record data for use in weather and climate modelling; would shots of these sensors be eligible? Photos of people aboard cruise ships? Photos of congestion in Dubrovnik? HLHJ (talk) 20:42, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you for your question, HLHJ. My understanding is that details of vessels also fall under the challenge theme. Passengers, people in general are allowed as long as the official guidelines are followed. Critical photos are very welcome, most especially regarding the negative impact on the Earth's climate. Best wishes :) -- Radomianin (talk) 06:35, 7 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, Radomianin! Sorry, I didn't do a very good job of balancing positive an d critical examples; your OPdid make it clear that content was not required to have a given editorial slant. So details and sociology-like pictures (as long as they follow guidelines) would be in-scope, but cold-ironing infrastructure would be a stretch and smog would be well out-of-scope? HLHJ (talk) 00:05, 12 October 2022 (UTC)

Brianjd (talk) 13:39, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
- Brianjd Sorry about being so north hemisphere centric, but every challenge will be a bad fit for someone. Current Commons:Photo challenge/2023 - January - Ice is at a time when the only ice you can find is probably in your freezer. Similarly with drone photography or macro photography - very few people have such specialized equipment. Last May we had a challenge about "Asian gardens" and I am not aware of any around where I live. Baby farm animals will also be a bad fit for me as I live in a city. With every challenge there are people who will have more chances for a winning shot than others and there is not much we can do about it. We hope that people who happen to be more disadvantages in a given month will get creative with interpretation of the rules or dig through their archives. --Jarekt (talk) 03:07, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Jarekt When I saw the ice challenge, I was thinking of an indoor ice display I went to a while ago (but I probably don’t have any photos from there worth looking at, let alone entering into a challenge) – I missed the fact that was also northern hemisphere centric. So maybe that’s a good argument for having this challenge six months later (September or October 2023). (Actually, in my city, we have neither snow nor baby animals at any time of year, though we sometimes have hail. So what would I know?)
- The picture you linked was creative with the categorization too; I have changed it. It’s good to see that not all entries are taken with high-end cameras, as I don’t have one. Brianjd (talk) 07:51, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Jarekt Going through the archives, I found Commons talk:Photo challenge/themes/Archive#Spring, also done in the northern hemisphere spring. If we must have hemisphere-specific challenges, we need to have them for both hemispheres. Brianjd (talk) 12:28, 27 January 2023 (UTC)
- Commons talk:Photo challenge/themes/Archive#Sundials: Nice, we could pick this one before the autumn begins. This theme was used at the start of the northern hemisphere autumn. Brianjd (talk) 12:32, 27 January 2023 (UTC)
- This is not strictly a seasonal challenge, there are farm animals born almost all around the year - even if the majority of the more "interesting" animals (lambs, calfs) are either born in spring or in winter, so they are still looking young in spring. But chicks of differen domestic birds hatch almost at all times of the year. I would oppose any clear seasonal challenge, but for other challenges, I think the way to go is to always find ways that allow participation for as many contributors as possible. As the person who suggested the ice challenge, I included images of icecubes and artificial ice in rinks for that reason - not only because of the people in the Northern hemisphere, but because of all the countries where natural ice is not a normal thing and (if at all) only to be found in high mountains. Here we also see baby chickens included as well as piglets that also are born at least twice a year. And Jarekt always takes good care to post such a more limited challenge for some users alongside one that allows wide participation - like the hospital challenge along with the ice challenge - which by the way did not allow me to contibute so far, because we had an extremely mild January in Germany. --Kritzolina (talk) 07:44, 30 January 2023 (UTC)
- Comment I was totally confused about the scope of this theme until I read the comments. I suggest renaming this section to ‘baby farm animals’, if that is what it is supposed to be about. Brianjd (talk) 13:41, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
