Steatite Ingredients Being Weighed |
||||||||||||||||||||
Description |
1. Steatite, the ceramic composition used as a base for the Helitrim trimming potentiometer elements, is prepared in specially constructed, temperature-controlled rooms. Quality raw materials (high purity talc and clay) of which the steatite is composed are first precisely measured. Ingredients are then thoroughly mixed with water in a ball milling process to make a homogeneous slurry. The mixture is then piped under pressure into a filter press where the moisture content is reduced to a predetermined level. Batches are isolated from each other throughout the entire steatite process. In addition all tools, equipment and facilities are thoroughly cleaned between batches. This extra care results in a higher quality and a more reliable end product. Published without a copyright notice in "The making of a cermet trimmer, 1966" in Beckman Instruments' newsletter Helinews, number 36, Spring 1966, pp. 4-5. Part of a two-page spread detailing the process of manufacturing cermet trimmers. |
